Regular white-tailed deer hunting season starts around the same time \u2014 Oct. 1 \u2014 in Westchester and Suffolk counties.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s special about October&#8217;s full moon?<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s Harvest Moon \u2014 where the full moon is closest to the autumnal equinox \u2014 will rise on Monday, Oct. 6, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/content\/full-moon-october#:~:text=Mark%20your%20calendars!,full%20Moon%20of%20the%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Farmer&#8217;s Almanac<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also the first of the year&#8217;s three supermoons, which is the largest and brightest full moon of the year because it&#8217;s at the closest point to Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Fall activities: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poughkeepsiejournal.com\/story\/news\/2025\/09\/19\/take-a-fall-hike-at-one-of-these-prime-5-new-york-state-parks\/86238479007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5 New York state parks near and far to visit for fall hikes, waterfall viewing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why is this good for hunters?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eveningtribune.com\/story\/sports\/outdoors\/2025\/09\/20\/archers-will-deer-hunt-under-a-harvest-moon-in-2025-what-it-means\/86219915007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hornell Evening Tribune outdoors columnist<\/a> Oak Duke says changing light affects deer in many ways, from hormonal changes to physical changes.<\/p>\n<p>The bright light from the Harvest Moon at the beginning of October will stimulate melatonin flow, which keeps the deer from breeding, before shortening days and increasing darkness leads to dissipating melatonin levels and the start of the breeding season \u2014 or the Whitetail Rut.<\/p>\n<p>The best time to hunt whitetail is right around and during the rut because their activity increases, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldandstream.com\/stories\/hunting\/deer-hunting\/best-days-whitetail-rut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outdoor recreation retailer Field and Stream<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whitetails will have their biological clocks set by this amazing Harvest Moon and the equinox,&#8221; Duke says. &#8220;And one month later, the annual whitetail rut peaks during the first and second week of November this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emily Barnes\u00a0reports\u00a0on consumer-related issues for the USA TODAY Network\u2019s New York Connect Team, focusing on scam and recall-related topics.
