{"id":250085,"date":"2025-09-23T22:55:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T22:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250085\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T22:55:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T22:55:11","slug":"tcu-iron-skillet-victory-bet-brings-mayoral-donation-to-fort-worths-open-space-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250085\/","title":{"rendered":"TCU Iron Skillet victory bet brings mayoral donation to Fort Worth\u2019s open space efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TCU\u2019s win against the Mustangs this weekend marked a historic triumph for the team \u2014 and a victory for Fort Worth\u2019s green spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The Horned Frogs football team won what could be the last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/sports\/2025-09-16\/dallas-mayor-eric-johnson-picks-trust-for-public-land-as-iron-skillet-wager-recipient-tcu-smu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBattle for the Iron Skillet\u201d rivalry<\/a>, a contest waged by Texas Christian University and Southern Methodist University since 1946.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of a civic wager between the cities, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson will make a donation to Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker\u2019s nonprofit, the Good Natured green space initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Founded by Parker in 2023, the initiative aims to push the city\u2019s open space conservation efforts forward by acquiring 10,000 acres of green space by 2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMayor Johnson\u2019s donation to the Good Natured initiative will contribute directly to our land acquisition goal and further our mission to preserve, protect, and expand Fort Worth\u2019s natural heritage and open spaces for generations to come,\u201d Parker said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Neither Johnson or Parker specified the dollar value of the donation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parker\u2019s initiative complements Fort Worth\u2019s open space conservation program established in 2019 in response to urban sprawl. The city was losing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortworthtexas.gov\/files\/content\/public\/v\/7\/departments\/tpw\/stormwater\/open-space\/2022.08.01_fw_os_strategy_report.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50 acres of open space<\/a> to development each week that same year, mostly fueled by population growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of today, over 1,000 acres have been saved through Good Natured, said Allison Docker, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/11\/15\/fort-worths-green-space-gets-new-champion-in-longtime-landscape-architect\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city\u2019s green space champion<\/a>. Of that total, about 600 acres consist of open space, and the remaining acreage consists of parkland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth is in the process of adding another 100 acres of open space by early next year, Docker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>City leaders have invested millions in open space acquisitions. That includes land near the Fort Worth Nature Center &amp; Refuge, Lake Arlington and the Tandy Hills Natural Area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More recently, City Council members approved a $13.4 million purchase in December for a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/12\/11\/300-acre-park-coming-to-north-fort-worth-as-part-of-13-4m-purchase\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">300-acre park<\/a> in north Fort Worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October, council members approved a $1.6 million purchase of land to expand the future <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/10\/18\/fort-worths-largest-community-park-set-to-expand-following-1-6m-purchase\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rock Creek Ranch Park<\/a>.
