{"id":250136,"date":"2025-09-23T23:21:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T23:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250136\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T23:21:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T23:21:19","slug":"completion-of-adelaide-street-tunnel-could-reduce-bus-congestion-in-brisbane-cbd-by-up-to-a-third-council-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250136\/","title":{"rendered":"Completion of Adelaide Street tunnel could reduce bus congestion in Brisbane CBD &#8216;by up to a third&#8217;, council says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After more than two years of construction, an underground tunnel set to alleviate congestion in Brisbane will officially open to commuters next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Thousands of passengers are expected to tour the now complete 213-metre Adelaide Street tunnel today, ahead of it being added to routes on September 29.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Construction on the tunnel was originally expected to be completed in mid-2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Running under one of the city&#8217;s oldest streets, around 16 Olympic swimming pools worth of soil and rock have been removed over the life of the project to deliver the underground infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The tunnel&#8217;s opening will mark the completion of the near decade-long campaign to reshape transport solutions in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Tunnel to provide dedicated busway connection<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Adelaide Street opening is the final piece of the Brisbane Metro puzzle, first touted by Brisbane City Council in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2019, the council announced a plan to turn Adelaide Street into a walkable boulevard and gateway to the city, replacing its busy lanes of traffic with a safer environment for pedestrians and active travellers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"underground drill rig with construction workers\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/47b9ef40409f203aa77c033a4de7e3c6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A purpose-built drill rig installed over 20 kilometres of steel canopy tubes to form the roof of the tunnel.
