Arne Slot<\/a> has described Hugo Ekitike<\/a>\u2018s red card as \u201cneedless and stupid,\u201d with the striker now suspended for Liverpool\u2019s next Premier League<\/a> match.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ekitike was shown a yellow card for throwing the ball away and then for an excessive celebration, earning him a one-match suspension he will serve on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The red card was entirely avoidable and leaves Slot without a striker who has scored three goals across his five Premier League<\/a> starts to date for the trip to Selhurst Park.<\/p>\n

It was the obvious topic of discussion after Liverpool secured their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup<\/a>, and Slot did not mince his words after the fact. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was needless, yes. And it was stupid, yep,\u201d he told reporters. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe first one was already needless and, to a certain extent, stupid because you have to control your emotions.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how hard it is if you play the Premier League<\/a>, or any other league in the world, if you are a No. 9, as the defender can do almost everything he wants, but if you push him a little bit you get a free-kick against you.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s always best to control your emotions, and if you can\u2019t, do it in a way that doesn\u2019t lead to a yellow card. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think I said when I got my red card against Everton<\/a> that\u2019s always stupid because you can show your emotions, but if it leads to a yellow or red card then it\u2019s stupid. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what happened with the first yellow. Then I told him as well, if you score in the Champions League<\/a> final in the 87th minute after outplaying three players and hitting it in the top corner, I can maybe understand \u2018it\u2019s all about me\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m old-fashioned, I\u2019m 47, and old, and I haven\u2019t played at this level, but I did score a few goals, and if I would\u2019ve scored goal like this, I would\u2019ve turned around to Federico Chiesa<\/a> and said, \u2018this goal is all about you\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeedless, not smart, you call it stupid and I call it stupid as well.\u201d <\/p>\n

Robbo: He won\u2019t do it again<\/p>\n

Andy Robertson<\/a>, captain on the night, offered an honest reaction post-match on the \u201csilly\u201d bookings that were entirely avoidable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be very surprised if he does it again,\u201d Robertson told Sky Sports. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think scoring a goal is always emotional, and you always get that emotion. But yeah, he\u2019s obviously just forgot that he\u2019s been booked.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first one is stupidity, kicking the ball away. We know the rules around that. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then, yeah, it\u2019s two silly bookings to pick up, and now we obviously miss him for Saturday. It\u2019s silly from his part, but he\u2019s only young, and he\u2019ll learn from it. <\/p>\n

\u201cHappy that he scored, but then, you know, last 10 minutes it was made a bit more difficult being down to 10 men, so he\u2019ll learn from it and like I said, I\u2019m sure he won\u2019t do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n
