Social Security\u2019s leadership says raising the retirement age is not under consideration after Commissioner Frank Bisignano walked back a televised remark that \u201ceverything\u2019s being considered,\u201d<\/a> and publicly clarified that \u201craising the retirement age is not under consideration.<\/p>\n

In a Fox Business interview<\/a> previously referenced by Fortune, Bisignano said: \u201cI think everything\u2019s being considered, will be considered.\u201d He also said: \u201cRemember, most people told you and I Social Security wasn\u2019t going to be around, and it\u2019s going to be around. And so the generations that are coming in will probably have a different set of rules than we had.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. does\u00a0not have one\u00a0universal retirement\u00a0age; Social Security\u2019s full retirement\u00a0age is 66\u201367\u00a0(67 if born\u00a01960 or later), early Social\u00a0Security can\u00a0start at 62 with\u00a0reduced benefits, and Medicare\u00a0eligibility generally\u00a0begins at 65. <\/p>\n

Later the same day, Bisignano posted a clarification on X<\/a>: \u201cLet me be clear: President Trump and I will always protect, and never cut, Social Security\u2026 Raising the retirement age is not under consideration.\u201d Coverage of the walk\u2011back emphasized the agency is not pursuing a higher retirement age following the initial \u201ceverything\u2019s being considered\u201d comment.<\/p>\n
