JACKSONVILLE, Fla. <\/strong> \u2013 The city of Jacksonville has cleared the way for a $27 million, 29,000-square-foot Mormon church to be built in Mandarin. <\/p>\n

According to the Jacksonville Daily Record<\/a>, the city issued the building permit on Monday for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to complete the project, which is expected to be placed on a 6.6-acre site at 3325 Loretto Road.<\/p>\n

President Russell M. Nelson announced the temple in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n

City records show the Church bought the land for $7.2 million in 2024.<\/p>\n

There are nearly 173,000 Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormons, in over 270 congregations in Florida, according to a news release.<\/p>\n

The four other temples that are announced, under construction or in operation in Florida are the Fort Lauderdale Temple<\/a>, Orlando Temple<\/a>, Tallahassee Temple<\/a> and the Tampa Temple<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints explains the difference between a temple and a church on its website.<\/a><\/p>\n

Latter-day Saints believe that temples are the most sacred places on Earth and differ from churches, which are designated for public weekly worship services.<\/p>\n
