{"id":250405,"date":"2025-09-24T01:58:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T01:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250405\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T01:58:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T01:58:09","slug":"ryder-cup-fans-behavior-will-shock-rory-mcilroy-after-his-troubling-prediction-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250405\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryder Cup fans&#8217; behavior will &#8216;shock&#8217; Rory McIlroy after his troubling prediction: director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the 45th Ryder Cup matches three days away at Bethpage Black, there\u2019s been some pot-stirring taking place projecting bad behavior on <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/23\/sports\/ryder-cup-fans-would-test-even-the-most-hardened-new-york-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the part of the rabid New York fans.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the top of the list among those doing the stirring has been Europe\u2019s best player, Rory McIlroy, who in a recent interview predicted trouble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s inevitable something is going to happen in New York,\u2019\u2019 McIlroy told Ewan Murray from the Guardian.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might not involve me, but it is inevitable that something will happen, whether like in Rome last time or something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think when you go into that environment and you are there for five or six days and the crowd are on you for eight hours, so many days in a row \u2026 it is inevitable it will get to someone or get to us as a group at some point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are just going to have to do a really good job of managing that, having each other\u2019s backs and protecting each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a conversation with The Post, Bryan Karns, the Ryder Cup championship director, poured cold water over McIlroy\u2019s forewarning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sort of welcome the opportunity to hear some of that chatter, knowing that what they\u2019re going to see is going to be quite the opposite,\u2019\u2019 Karns said. \u201cThe best thing we can do is go out and just break that narrative. When I hear that [there will be bad behavior], it\u2019s coming from someone that doesn\u2019t understand this market, someone maybe doesn\u2019t appreciate these fans for who they are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s yahoos at every Ryder Cup, and the fact is we\u2019ll deal with them very quickly \u2014 there\u2019s really zero tolerance. I think sports fans in New York self-police very well. It\u2019s maybe the most underrated part about this city in my opinion.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Karns estimated that some 50,000 to 55,000 fans will be at the matches from Thursday-Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A fans hold up an American flag during a practice round of the Ryder Cup golf tournament at Bethpage Black. State Police that will be deployed for the week, saying, \u201cWe\u2019re asked not to share that publicly, but to give any indication of what the comprehensive security plan is, this is obviously a big task for New York State Police and it\u2019s an all-hands-on-deck situation.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Karns, who\u2019s a native of Oklahoma, has immersed himself in New York and its sports scene while living here for three years and building this Ryder Cup. He\u2019s attended Yankees and Mets games, gone to the Garden to see the Knicks and Rangers, been to MetLife for Giants and Jets games. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think New York sports fans are incredibly smart,\u2019\u2019 Karns said. \u201cI think what\u2019s going to shock people is that it\u2019s going to be less about anything directed at the other team and more about cheering on their own team.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Complicating logistical matters is President Trump having announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/24\/us-news\/trump-announces-hell-attend-ryder-cup-in-new-york-as-he-weighs-in-on-us-lineup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he plans to come to the Friday session,<\/a> which has potential to thwart entrance for the general public, particularly if he comes to the morning session, which begins with first balls in the air at 7:10.<\/p>\n<p>(l-r) Derek Sprague, PGA of America CEO and Bryan Karns, Championship Director of the 2025 Ryder Cup speak with the media following a press conference on September 17, 2025 in Farmingdale, New York.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s attendance at the U.S. Open tennis final last month delayed the match because fans had issues getting into the facility because of heightened security.<\/p>\n<p>Though Karns wouldn\u2019t confirm or deny, there are indications that the PGA of America has recommended to Trump\u2019s Secret Service detail that attending in the afternoon Friday would be better logistically.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still finalizing all that,\u2019\u2019 Karns said. \u201cI think [Trump] more than anything wants to ensure that the disruption is minimal and that he doesn\u2019t do anything to detract from the event.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>U.S. captain Keegan Bradley said he\u2019s \u201cdeeply honored\u2019\u2019 that Trump plans to attend.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Ryder Cup on Friday. AP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re representing your country at a place like Bethpage Black in New York, having the president there to support you is something that is just absolutely incredible,\u2019\u2019 Bradley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnytime a sitting president wants to come to an event, it just shows how big the Ryder Cup is,\u2019\u2019 European captain Luke Donald said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to see that as a mark of respect. He knows a lot of the players.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Among those players is Scottie Scheffler, the world\u2019s No. 1 player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/23\/sports\/trump-calls-texts-scottie-scheffler-after-golf-stars-wins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get a call or text from him sometimes<\/a> after wins,\u2019\u2019 Scheffler said Tuesday. \u201cThe president is kind of funny. He loves the game of golf. He\u2019s one of those guys when you\u2019re around him he does such a good job of feeding confidence into everybody around him.
