{"id":250647,"date":"2025-09-24T04:16:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T04:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250647\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T04:16:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T04:16:13","slug":"harry-tyner-jr-longtime-dj-of-aids-run-walk-chicago-dies-at-54","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250647\/","title":{"rendered":"Harry Tyner Jr., longtime DJ of AIDS Run &#038; Walk Chicago, dies at 54"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When thousands gather Saturday, Sept. 27 for the annual AIDS Run &amp; Walk Chicago, the music will carry a bittersweet note.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the soundtrack of the event came from behind Harry Tyner Jr.\u2019s DJ booth, where his mixes set the tone for fundraising, remembrance and community pride.<\/p>\n<p>Tyner, who cultivated joy across Chicago\u2019s LGBTQ+ community through his music, died Sept. 12 surrounded by friends and family. He was 54.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to supporting the AIDS Foundation Chicago (AFC) at its annual Run &amp; Walk fundraiser, Tyner was a fixture in Chicago\u2019s nightlife, where his sets brought people together at clubs, Pride festivals and community gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>He also contributed as a writer and photographer for BLACKlines during the publication\u2019s original run in the 1990s, helping document the stories and culture of Chicago\u2019s Black LGBTQ+ community during a pivotal era.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Harry-Tyner-Jr.-interviewed-the-legendary-house-music-DJ-Frankie-Knuckles-in-the-February-1999-issue.png\" alt=\"Harry Tyner, Jr. interviewed the legendary house music DJ Frankie Knuckles in the February 1999 issue of BLACKlines\" class=\"wp-image-450913\"  \/>Harry Tyner, Jr. interviewed the legendary house music DJ Frankie Knuckles in the February 1999 issue of BLACKlines<\/p>\n<p>At AFC\u2019s Run &amp; Walk, Tyner\u2019s role went far beyond spinning tracks. He also volunteered with media outreach and joined staff for TV appearances to promote the event.<\/p>\n<p>Edward Wagner, AFC\u2019s director of development, recalled one year when Tyner took part in a live tug-of-war contest on WGN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost,\u201d Wagner said with a laugh. \u201cBut Harry was right there with us, bright and early, spreading the word and building awareness about AFC. He cared deeply about the mission and about people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wagner, who has been with AFC for 12 years, said he couldn\u2019t recall a single Run &amp; Walk that Tyner didn\u2019t help shape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a fantastic DJ, but also just a genuinely kind and earnest person who connected deeply with staff, supporters and the community,\u201d Wagner said. \u201cHe\u2019ll be especially missed on Saturday, when we\u2019ll take time to honor his impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friends said that same mix of dedication and warmth carried into Tyner\u2019s personal relationships.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/John-Peller-Harry-Tyner-Jr.-and-Edward-Wagner-at-the-2018-AIDS-Run-Walk-Chicago.-Photo-provided-by-A.jpeg\" alt=\"John Peller, Harry Tyner, Jr. and Edward Wagner at the 2018 AIDS Run &amp; Walk Chicago. Photo provided by AIDS Foundation Chicago<\/p>\n<p>Mara Lynne, who met Tyner through AFC\u2019s ambassador team, remembered his humor and protectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always the one to say, \u2018Call me when you get home,\u2019 and he meant it,\u201d Lynne said. \u201cHe could make you laugh until your stomach hurt, but he was also deeply serious about caring for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Luis Valentino Vargas-Navarro, Tyner was a constant presence for more than 35 years, even after Vargas-Navarro moved to Las Vegas. Their bond stretched across decades of late-night phone calls, inside jokes and a shared devotion to the musician Prince.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time you saw him, it was always the same smile, the same hug and the same friend,\u201d Vargas-Navarro said. \u201cAnd his music was his way of connecting with everybody he touched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyner\u2019s sets could be heard across the city at clubs like Touch\u00e9, Pride celebrations, Black Pride festivals and other community events.
