{"id":250831,"date":"2025-09-24T06:04:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T06:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250831\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T06:04:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T06:04:11","slug":"cascade-pbs-cuts-12-of-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/250831\/","title":{"rendered":"Cascade PBS cuts 12% of staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cascade PBS in Seattle is cutting 17 employees in response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/current.org\/tag\/rescission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rescission<\/a> of federal funding to public broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis unprecedented federal decision has had devastating effects on more than 300 public television and radio outlets across the country, and we\u2019re not immune here at home,\u201d said Cascade PBS CEO Rob Dunlop in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The release said the eliminated positions are in the marketing, creative and editorial departments and represent a 12% reduction in staff. The station will also cease production of long-form written journalism.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Rob-Dunlop.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3887864\" style=\"width:250px\"  \/>Dunlop<\/p>\n<p>Cascade PBS will continue to produce several local series and plans to expand its news and public affairs program, The Newsfeed, from weekly to five days a week, according to the release.<\/p>\n<p>The layoffs amount to a net reduction of 16 positions because the station is \u201chiring some new positions and not backfilling others,\u201d Don Wilcox, a spokesperson for Cascade PBS, told Current in an email. Wilcox added that the layoffs do not affect <a href=\"https:\/\/current.org\/2025\/07\/with-local-public-apps-stations-aim-to-build-loyalty-with-more-streamers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Local Public<\/a>, the streaming initiative Cascade PBS launched in 2020 to help stations develop apps and improve viewers\u2019 streaming experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are painful cuts to make,\u201d Dunlop said in the release. \u201cIt has an impact both on our community and on the staff who\u2019ve served this region with passion. Their work has earned well-deserved industry recognition, and we\u2019re grateful for their dedication and achievements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news release said Cascade PBS will offer severance packages and benefits \u201cthat go beyond organization policy and those outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.\u201d Earlier this year, the Cascade PBS Union, which is under the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild, <a href=\"https:\/\/current.org\/2025\/06\/cascade-pbs-union-secures-pay-raises-in-ratified-contract-with-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">negotiated a contract<\/a> that doubled the severance package for union staffers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is deeply disappointed that Cascade PBS is choosing to eliminate its newsroom and lay off its reporters at a time when we need good, thoughtful journalism more than ever,\u201d said Guild spokesperson Courtney Scott in an email statement to Current. \u201cWe do not yet fully understand why this decision was made and we will be meeting with Cascade PBS executives and management in the coming days to discuss the impact on our union members and the reasoning behind these decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cascade PBS received a Community Service Grant from CPB of about $3.5 million, according to CPB\u2019s website.
