While the streets of San Antonio are often filled with gritos year round, the city has started its annual Fiestas Patrias event series, meant to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture on the nation through mid-October.<\/p>\n
From book talks and mariachi performances to catrina makeup tutorials and sci-fi film screenings, there\u2019s something for everyone to celebrate this Hispanic Heritage Month in San Antonio. <\/p>\n
Although the celebration officially started last week, here\u2019s a roundup of events you can still attend through next month and beyond.<\/p>\n

Luminaria\u2019s Pop-Up Art Gallery at the Aiden The Frida in Us<\/strong><\/a> Visit the pop-up gallery at the Aiden Hotel with several restaurants and shops in the area to explore. The gallery is free and open at all hours through Oct. 10.<\/p>\n Thursday, Sept. 25<\/p>\n An Evening of Poetry with Eddie Vega<\/strong><\/a> San Antonio Poet Laureate Eddie Vega shares his work and engages in a Q&A in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. This event is free and open to the public. Register here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Saturday, Sept. 27<\/p>\n Kickoff MujerArtes 30th Annual Celebration Exhibit and Sale<\/strong><\/a> This exhibition will display hand-painted pieces of clay art made by women in the MujerArtes Women\u2019s Clay Cooperative. Attendees are able to purchase clay art on display until Nov. 1. The kickoff event with music, food and art demonstrations will be free and open to the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n Cisneros v. Corpus Christi ISD: The Long Fight to End School Segregation <\/strong>Opening Reception<\/strong><\/a> and <\/strong>Exhibit<\/strong><\/a> Visit MACRI\u2019s exhibit on the historic Corpus Christi case that extended the protections of Brown v. Board of Education to Mexican American students. The exhibit will remain on display through Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. <\/strong>Register here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Friday, Oct. 3<\/p>\n Living Heritage: A Dia de Los Muertos Presentation<\/strong><\/a> Villa Finale\u2019s event will showcase catrina icons and a live catrina makeup tutorial. The program will also include a Q&A with designer Araminta Romero, whose work has been featured at New York Fashion Week. Tickets can be purchased here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Saturday, Oct. 4<\/p>\n Besos and Books<\/strong><\/a> Authors Angelina M. Lopez and Gabriella Gamez will discuss the creation of love stories and reflect on culture at the Central Library to highlight Hispanic voices in romance. Copies of the authors\u2019 books will be available for purchase, and anyone with their own copies are encouraged to bring them for the authors to sign. Registration is required and can be done here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Thursday, Oct. 9<\/p>\n Raza C\u00f3smica: Un futuro brillante (A Bright Future)<\/strong><\/a> As part of Raza C\u00f3smica, an annual showcase of sci-fi films made by Latinx and BIPOC filmmakers, the Slab Cinema Arthouse will be premiering \u201cUn Futuro Brillante\u201d by Lucia Garibaldi. The film will be preceded by Alejandro Damiani\u2019s short film, \u201cM.A.M.\u00d3.N. This event is free and open to the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n Raza C\u00f3smica: Xicanx Versus Aliens<\/strong><\/a> Joaqu\u00edn Muerte, activist and musician, will host a live episode of \u201cXicanx Versus Aliens,\u201d his podcast that discusses various sci-fi topics from a \u201cperson of color perspective.\u201d This event is free and open to the public. Register here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Avenida Guadalupe Association\u2019s 8th Annual Fiesta Alegria \u2013 Official National Hispanic\/Mestizo Heritage Month Closing Celebration<\/strong><\/a> The Avenida Guadalupe Association closes out Hispanic Heritage Month with this festival of heavy metal and rock music, led by students of San Antonio College\u2019s Music Business Department. This event is free and open to the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n Ongoing Exhibitions<\/p>\n Cuentos y Arte: Mexican American Folktales of the Southwest<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> Curated by Rebecca Gomez and the five participating artists \u2014 women with a shared heritage of working in South Texas and the Southwest United States\u2014have created works of art influenced by various folk tales. Opening reception is at 6 p.m. on Oct. 2. The free exhibition is open Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. through Feb. 22.<\/p>\n Madre_Land: South Texas Memory & the Art of Making Home<\/strong><\/a> Curated by Bonnie Cisneros and featuring 26 South Texas artists and scholars with artworks honoring domestic aesthetics, rasquache sensibility, ancestral healing and natural world\/environmental motifs. Opening reception is at 6 p.m. on Oct. 2. The free exhibition is open Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. through Feb. 22.<\/p>\n FOTOSEPTIEMBRE: Celebrating Latino Culture and Community<\/strong><\/a> This photography exhibition curated by Dr. Ricardo Romo showcases a visual archive of Latino culture and community. Viewing hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are free and open to the public through Sept. 25.<\/p>\n Zenith of Zeigarnik at Central Library<\/strong><\/a> This augmented reality experience (the first of its kind for the San Antonio Public Library) explores a digital world through which personal memories were captured.
