This October, the National Portrait Gallery<\/a> is shining a light on photographs taken by Cecil Beaton that feature dazzling looks worn by icons of the 20th century. <\/p>\n

While much has been written about the polymath\u2019s pioneering work \u2013 as a photographer, artist, playwright, essayist, horticulturalist, interiors expert and triple-Oscar-winning costume designer \u2013 his photographic contributions to style have never commanded their own show, until now.<\/p>\n

Titled \u2018Cecil Beaton\u2019s Fashionable World\u2019, the display will showcase Beaton\u2019s portraits of the era\u2019s most prolific figures. Almost entirely self-taught, he was drawn to the starry allure of Hollywood and the opulence of royalty; his subjects included Marilyn Monroe<\/a>, Elizabeth Taylor<\/a>, Elizabeth II<\/a> and Princess Margaret<\/a>, as well as art legends such as Salvador Dal\u00ed and Lucian Freud. He also depicted the youthful aristocrats and socialites of the time, who became known as the \u2018Bright Young Things\u2019 \u2013 including the model Nina De Voe, who he captured gloriously in 1951 wearing a grand Balmain ballgown.<\/p>\n

Among these portraits, there will be more than 250 items on display \u2013 including letters, sketches and garments \u2013 that chart Beaton\u2019s stratospheric rise to success. The exhibition will begin in 1920s London, revealing his experiments with his very first camera, and will explore his early portraits of high-society patrons, such as the Sitwells; his travels to Paris and New York during the Jazz Age; post-World War II elegance and the high fashion of the Fifties. It will then conclude with the much-lauded costumes he created for My Fair Lady \u2013 on stage and screen \u2013 that solidified his status as a visionary force of his time and beyond.<\/p>\n
