{"id":251791,"date":"2025-09-24T19:20:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T19:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/251791\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T19:20:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T19:20:13","slug":"twin-mars-spacecraft-arrive-in-florida-for-launch-on-blue-origins-powerful-new-glenn-rocket-photo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/251791\/","title":{"rendered":"Twin Mars spacecraft arrive in Florida for launch on Blue Origin&#8217;s powerful New Glenn rocket (photo)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"ee979f62-6a0c-47d2-90c0-aa541ef5b4bb\">A pair of spacecraft have arrived in Florida ahead of their launch on a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket and a voyage to the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p>Launch and space systems company <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rocket Lab<\/a> delivered the twin ESCAPADE (&#8220;Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers&#8221;) spacecraft to NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> on Monday (Sept. 22).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"ee979f62-6a0c-47d2-90c0-aa541ef5b4bb-2\">The twin probes, named Blue and Gold, are designed to study <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars&#8217; atmosphere<\/a>. The spacecraft will now be inspected and tested ahead of integration with the 322-foot-tall (98 meters) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Glenn rocket<\/a> in preparation for launch, which is scheduled to occur no earlier than this fall.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"83998282-77d3-4b9b-9f9a-7bb459dab72e\">The $80 million mission is part of NASA&#8217;s Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration (SIMPLEx) program, which targets high-value science while operating on tighter budgets and shorter timelines.<\/p>\n<p>Blue and Gold will enter elliptical orbits around Mars to study how the planet interacts with the solar wind and also how the planet&#8217;s atmosphere is stripped away by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar wind<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather<\/a> effects. They carry magnetometers, to measure magnetic fields, electrostatic analyzers to detect ions and electrons, and Langmuir probes for measuring key parameters of plasma.<\/p>\n<p>California-based Rocket Lab designed and developed the spacecraft over a 3.5-year period, based on the company&#8217;s interplanetary Explorer spacecraft platform.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delivering two interplanetary spacecraft on schedule and within budget for a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> mission is no small feat, and it speaks to the determination and agility of our team. They&#8217;ve proven that we can take a concept from design to Mars readiness in just a few short years,&#8221; Rocket Lab founder and CEO Peter Beck said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/updates\/rocket-labs-two-mars-bound-spacecraft-arrive-in-florida-ahead-of-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/updates\/rocket-labs-two-mars-bound-spacecraft-arrive-in-florida-ahead-of-launch\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>The mission will be the second flight of the powerful New Glenn rocket, which reached orbit on its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-launches-massive-new-glenn-rocket-into-orbit-on-1st-flight-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-launches-massive-new-glenn-rocket-into-orbit-on-1st-flight-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debut flight<\/a> in January of this year. Notably, this mission is taking place outside of the traditional <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24701-how-long-does-it-take-to-get-to-mars.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24701-how-long-does-it-take-to-get-to-mars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hohmann transfer windows<\/a> for Mars, which open for a few weeks every 26 months and are the most energy-efficient times for launch. Instead, New Glenn will send the ESCAPADE probes on a longer, 22-month cruise phase to Mars, meaning they are scheduled to arrive at the Red Planet in the second half of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Launch will take place at New Glenn&#8217;s pad at Space Launch Complex-36, located at Cape Canaveral Space Force Base in Florida.
