General Assembly on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-ukraine-europe-us-policy-un-kyiv-war-russia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. President Donald Trump said<\/a> he believes NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft in their airspace.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly afterwards, Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski responded to a clip of Trump\u2019s answer to a reporter\u2019s question on the matter by saying \u201cRoger that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on British radio station LBC on Wednesday, Sikorski elaborated: \u201cThe army has a duty to protect its territory, also in the air, and we will do what\u2019s necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he said, his preferred response is \u201cthat we should intercept drones and cruise missiles over [Ukrainian] territory before they threaten doing damage to lives and property over NATO territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russian interference in Europe isn\u2019t new, and hasn\u2019t been limited to air incursions. Moscow has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/vladimir-putin-aggressive-hybrid-attacks-germany-spy-chief-martina-rosenberg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stepped up espionage<\/a>, cyberattacks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/moldova-election-russian-interference-maia-sandu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">election interference campaigns<\/a> in European countries since the start of its war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia is testing on all fields,\u201d von der Leyen told CNN. \u201cI mean, that\u2019s a hybrid war that we experienced since many, many years that Russia is leading against the democracies of the European Union and others. And therefore we fight back on all the different fields. And as I said, it\u2019s a decision of NATO, but I would be very clear: You don\u2019t touch our territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Von der Leyen holds no power to direct military action by EU countries, but as head of the bloc\u2019s executive branch her opinion on the matter is hugely influential.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On the sidelines of the U.N.
