Last week, ABC and Disney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/jimmy-kimmel-out-abc-charlie-kirk-comments-1235430078\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abruptly suspended<\/a> the long-running late-night series, citing an \u201cill-timed and thus insensitive\u201d monologue in which the comedian criticized right-wingers for trying to \u201cscore political points\u201d off the murder of Charlie Kirk. Jimmy Kimmel kept quiet in the days that followed, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/aclu-jimmy-kimmel-protest-letter-signed-1235432510\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood raised its voice on his behalf<\/a>. Now that the show has been reinstated, he\u2019s ready to talk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe late-night host was welcomed on Tuesday by a roar of applause from the audience as they chanted, \u201cJimmy! Jimmy!\u201d Kimmel began by showing his gratitude for his supporters across the country and fellow comedians, including Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver, Conan O\u2019Brien, James Corden, Jay Leno, Howard Stern, and David Letterman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cMaybe most of all, I want to thank the people who don\u2019t support my show and what I believe, but support my right to share those beliefs anyway,\u201d he continued. \u201cPeople I never would have imagined,<br \/>like Ben Shapiro, Clay Travis, Candace Owens, Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul. Even my old pal Ted Cruz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe added, \u201cEven though I don\u2019t agree with many of those people on most subjects \u2014 some of the things they say even make me want to throw up \u2014 it takes courage for them to speak out against this administration, and they did, and they deserve credit for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tKimmel then addressed his previous remarks on his show about Kirk\u2019s assassination. He became emotional, his voice breaking, as he said, \u201cIt was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything funny about it. I posted a message on Instagram on the day he was killed, sending love to his family and asking for compassion, and I meant it. And I still do,\u201d he continued. \u201cNor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions \u2014 it was a deeply disturbed individual. That was really the opposite of the point I was trying to make, but I understand that to some, that felt ill-timed or unclear or maybe both, and for those who think I did point a finger, I get why you\u2019re upset. If the situation was reversed, there\u2019s a good chance I would have felt the same way. I have many friends and family members on the other side who I love and remain close to, even though we don\u2019t agree on politics at all. I don\u2019t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone, this was a sick person who believed violence was a solution, and it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLater in his monologue, he also criticized the Trump administration\u2019s attempts to pull him from the air. \u201cI barely paid attention in school, but one thing I did learn from Lenny Bruce and George Carlin and Howard Stern is that a government threat to silence a comedian the president doesn\u2019t like is anti-American,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I am so glad we have some solidarity on that from the right and the left and from those in the middle, like Joe Rogan. Maybe the silver lining from this is we found one thing we can agree on, and maybe we\u2019ll even find another one. Maybe we can get a little bit closer together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGlen Powell appeared as the latest guest on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jimmy-kimmel-live\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jimmy-kimmel-live\" data-tag=\"jimmy-kimmel-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/a>! with musical guest Sarah McLachlan. This week will also feature Ethan Hawke, Lisa Ann Walter, and Yungblud on Wednesday. Peyton Manning, Oscar Nu\u00f1ez, and Alex G will appear on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe monologue is the first time Kimmel has directly addressed being pulled from the air; but in the hours before the broadcast, he shared a photo of himself with Norman Lear. \u201cMissing this guy today,\u201d he captioned the Instagram post.
