\n\tMariah Carey<\/a> isn\u2019t the biggest fan of artists covering her songs.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an interview with GQ<\/a>, the topic of covers came up and Mariah told a story of Prince once telling her that he didn\u2019t like when other singers did covers of his songs, in regards to Carey\u2019s rendition of his record \u201cThe Beautiful Ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI love \u2018The Beautiful Ones\u2019 so much,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I remember\u00a0Prince, he didn\u2019t like people to redo his songs. He said to me, \u2018I love \u2018Honey\u2019 though.\u2019 It\u2019s like, \u2018Prince likes \u2018Honey\u2019!\u2019 [Laughs] But about [my cover of] \u2018The Beautiful Ones,\u2019 he said he didn\u2019t like when people did covers of his songs. And I was like, \u2018Oh no, he doesn\u2019t like it.\u2019 But then he told me that he liked \u2018Honey.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd apparently she feels the same way because she was then asked if she liked when people covered her songs to which she answered, \u201cNot really.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe was then asked about the viral reaction<\/a> to her watching Muni Long<\/a> covering her hit record \u201cWe Belong Together\u201d during the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards where the legendary singer was being honored as an industry icon and appeared to be a bit uncomfortable during her tribute performance.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI didn\u2019t even hear the cover. I didn\u2019t know it happened. No one told me,\u201d she said perhaps blaming her reaction on the venue\u2019s acoustics. \u201cI just didn\u2019t know that she had done \u2018We Belong Together\u2019 [as a cover] \u2018cause her song was so similar to \u2018We Belong Together.\u2019 I had no idea that she did \u2018We Belong Together.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAdding, \u201cI\u2019m very honored and flattered that she did it. I love Muni Long, she\u2019s a great person, umm, but I just don\u2019t like people doing my songs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMuni took to social media and gave her side of the story, telling her followers that she was paying homage and was asked to do that specific song.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe people that\u2019s got a lot to say, you don\u2019t understand how this\u2026paying homage and having respect for people, you know what I\u2019m saying,\u201d Long explained<\/a> at the time. \u201cShe asked me to do it. You thought I chose to get on TV and sing a Mariah Carey song? You thought that was my choice? Why would I do that? Nobody can sing Mariah\u2019s songs like Mariah. Nobody. I didn\u2019t chose that. She asked me to do it and of course I said yes \u2019cause why would I ever say no? I did my best, and that\u2019s all I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMariah also showed Muni love on her Instagram Stories<\/a> after the show and posted a picture of herself, Long and Tori Kelly along with a caption that read, \u201cSo beyond grateful for these two gorgeous, uber-talented, kind, incredible musicians who made my heart so full of joy with their tribute performances at the @iheartradio awards. I love and appreciate you so much!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two singers have collaborated a bunch over the years, most recently in 2024 when Mariah hopped on the remix for Muni\u2019s hit single \u201cMade for Me<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
