title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/topic\/Celebrating_Pride\/\">Pride Month celebration<\/a> by highlighting local groups that support Jacksonville\u2019s unique and vibrant LGBTQ+ community, and today, the focus is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transgenderawarenessproject.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.transgenderawarenessproject.net\/\">Transgender Awareness Project<\/a> (TAP), founded in Jacksonville by Paige Mahogany Parks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a diversity office shutdown<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Transgender Awareness Project works to educate the broader public about the diverse challenges faced by transgender individuals, including discrimination, violence and social stigma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cTAP works to replace disrespect, discrimination, and violence with empathy, opportunity, and justice,\u201d the organization says about its mission on its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It also posted the following statistics to further showcase why its work is essential to the transgender community:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Nearly half (46%) of respondents were verbally harassed in the past year because of being transgender.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Nearly one in ten (9%) respondents were physically attacked in the past year because of being transgender.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Nearly half (47%) of respondents were sexually assaulted at some point in their lifetime, and one in ten (10%) were sexually assaulted in the past year. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 ehhZIC\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">In communities of color, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transequality.org\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/usts\/USTSBlackRespondentsReport-1017.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">these numbers are higher<\/a>: 53% of Black respondents were sexually assaulted in their lifetime, and 13% were sexually assaulted in the last year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>72% of respondents who have done sex work, 65% of respondents who have experienced homelessness, and 61% of respondents with disabilities reported being sexually assaulted in their lifetime.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>More than half (54%) experienced some form of intimate partner violence, including acts involving coercive control and physical harm.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Through Pride marches, public forums and educational workshops, TAP strives to promote greater acceptance and equality for transgender people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of its key programs, Operation ID, helps individuals obtain legal name changes at no cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">TAP also offers financial assistance programs, advocates for a public safety committee, and organizes community drop-offs to collect and distribute essential items like clothing and
