SAN ANTONIO – We’re about a month away from a vote that could push Project Marvel forward or stop it in its tracks.<\/p>\n
City officials and Spurs officials explained the numbers at a District 8 town hall Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
District 8 councilwoman Ivalis Meza Gonzalez, City Manager Eric Walsh and a representative with the Spurs discussed all things about the project; talking about what the project will mean for the city and who’s paying for it.<\/p>\n
Officials answered dozens of questions about funding, the timeline and lasting impacts the project is expected to have.<\/p>\n
Constituents voiced similar concerns as we’ve heard since the project was first brought forward in 2024. Councilwoman Meza Gonzalez said they’ll answer those questions as many times as they need to between now and November.<\/p>\n
“The city should not contribute one penny to the new stadium,” one woman said. “The Spurs can afford to pay for the stadium if they really need a new one.”<\/p>\n
“That’s really the best we can do is explain and re-explain over and over again,” Meza Gonzalez said. “You can never explain that enough. So, making sure that residents understand all the funding mechanisms that are involved in this project \u2014 it’s a complex project so the answers are also complex.”<\/p>\n
Councilwoman Meza Gonzalez and City Manager Walsh also strongly emphasized that no money from the general fund will be used to cover the cost of the city’s $489 Million share of a new Spurs arena.<\/p>\n
