Sen. Ted Cruz: ‘Your political opponents are not Nazis’<\/p>\n
Sen. Ted Cruz spoke out after two detainees at an ICE facility in Dallas, Texas, were killed and another was critically injured in a sniper shooting.<\/p>\n
A shooter opened fire on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas on Wednesday, killing one detainee and critically wounding two others in what authorities are investigating as an “act of targeted violence.”<\/p>\n
Officials say the shooter fired “indiscriminately” from a nearby rooftop, striking the immigration facility and a van in the sallyport, where the victims were hit. The gunman was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.<\/p>\n
The shooting is being investigated as a targeted attack on law enforcement, authorities said, though no agents were hit by gunfire. FBI Director Kash Patel<\/a> said there was evidence of an “ideological motive” at the scene and posted an image on X showing an unspent shell casing inscribed with the words “ANTI-ICE” in blue writing.<\/p>\n Officials have not confirmed the name of the suspect. CNN<\/a> and NBC News<\/a> identified the alleged attacker as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.<\/p>\n The incident was the second shooting at a Texas ICE facility this year<\/a> and comes just two weeks after a gunman fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk<\/a> at a college in Utah. Officials speaking at a news conference on Wednesday called for an end to political violence and partly blamed the shooting on rhetoric “demonizing” law enforcement agents carrying out immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n “This is wrong. Politically motivated violence is wrong,” said Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, adding, \u201cWe need to learn to work together without demonizing each other, without attacking each other.\u201d<\/p>\n Among the victims of the shooting was a Mexican national who was left “seriously injured,” the country\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.<\/p>\n “Consular officials have contacted the victim’s family to provide support and legal assistance,” Mexican officials said in a statement about the victim, who is being treated at a hospital. “The consulate is in ongoing communication with the authorities in charge of the investigation and is waiting for authorization to visit the hospitalized Mexican citizen.”<\/p>\n Mexican officials are calling for a full investigation into the shooting and access to the victim.<\/p>\n Their push comes as President Claudia Sheinbaum also said Wednesday that she sent a diplomatic note<\/a> asking for information about the fatal shooting<\/a> of a Mexican national outside Chicago at the hands of immigration agents.\u00a0<\/p>\n Immigration officials announced late Wednesday evening that they would increase security at agency facilities around the country in response to the shooting.<\/p>\n Agency spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin shared a video on social media of her saying that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem<\/a> had ordered “enhanced security<\/a>” around detention facilities and field offices.<\/p>\n McLaughlin didn\u2019t say what increased security measures would look like, but Noem\u2019s calls for increased security come as agency officials outside Chicago installed metal fences around a facility where people protest immigration enforcement daily. Local fire department officials have requested that the fence be taken down, saying it presents a hazard in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n McLaughlin also said that the agency would increase recruitment, adding “there\u2019s safety in numbers.”<\/p>\n In a post on social media calling the shooting “despicable<\/a>,” President Donald Trump<\/a> blamed the attack in Texas on “Deranged Radical Leftists” and said he would sign an executive order this week “to dismantle these Domestic Terrorism Networks.”<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s comments faulting parts of the left come as authorities have released little information about the shooter beyond a picture of a shell casing that reads “ANTI-ICE.” It wasn’t immediately clear how such an executive order would be implemented.<\/p>\n Democratic elected officials also immediately condemned the attack in Texas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n “The shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas is an unacceptable act of violence<\/a>. My heart is with the victims and their loved ones,” Sen. Cory Booker wrote on X. “While we don\u2019t know all of the details yet, what we can, and all should, agree on is that the vilification of any group of people endangers them. It makes them targets. And it must stop.”<\/p>\n Vice President JD Vance<\/a> told a North Carolina crowd that stopping political violence \u201cstarts, unfortunately, at the very top of the Democratic Party,\u201d as he lashed out at the left in the wake of the shooting at a Dallas ICE facility.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you want to stop political violence, stop attacking our law enforcement as the Gestapo,\u201d Vance said at a rally in Concord, a suburb of Charlotte. \u201cIf you want to stop political violence, stop telling your supporters that everybody who disagrees with you is a Nazi. If you want to stop political violence, look in the mirror.”<\/p>\n Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin condemned \u201cthis senseless and cowardly attack\u201d in a statement about the ICE shooting.<\/p>\n \u201cLet me be clear: It will take all of us \u2013 not just one side of the aisle or the other \u2013 to quell this epidemic of violence, which has no place in our democracy,\u201d Martin added. \u201cDemocrats remain committed to resolving differences through debate and elections, not with weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n A Sept. 11 study by the libertarian think tank Cato Institute<\/a> found that terrorists motivated by extreme sectors of right-leaning ideology killed six times more people than those on the far left of the political spectrum between 1975 and Sept. 10 of this year.<\/p>\n \u2013 Zac Anderson, Sudiksha Kochi<\/p>\n The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that one detainee was killed<\/a> and two were critically injured in Wednesday\u2019s shooting.<\/p>\n The agency had earlier said two detainees were killed and one was badly hurt.<\/p>\n The suspect in the deadly shooting at the ICE field office in Dallas, Texas, has been identified, multiple news outlets reported.<\/p>\n The alleged attacker was identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, according to CNN<\/a> and NBC News<\/a>. Officials have not confirmed the name of the suspect.<\/p>\n According to a City of Dallas database of active police calls, 38 police units responded to a 6:38 a.m. call for assistance at 8100 N. Stemmons Freeway, where the local ICE headquarters is located. The facility is in the northwestern part of the city.<\/p>\n Daniel Comeaux, chief of the Dallas Police Department, said at a news conference that police responded to the area after an initial call for assistance came in around 6:40 a.m.<\/p>\n At the scene, officers learned four people were shot, including the gunman, Comeaux said.<\/p>\n \u2013 Lauren Villagran<\/p>\n Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson asked people to try not to jump to conclusions before investigators work to identify a clear motive for Wednesday\u2019s deadly shooting.<\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s be patient, let\u2019s remain calm and let our let partners our law enforcement partners, our police department do their job,\u201d he said at a news conference. \u201cThis is an active investigation. There\u2019s still a lot of unanswered questions. And I want to encourage all of you to exercise a little bit of restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas condemned Wednesday\u2019s shooting and called on politicians to stop using rhetoric \u201cdemonizing\u201d ICE and Border Patrol agents.<\/p>\n \u201cThis needs to stop,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is wrong. Politically motivated violence is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n Cruz noted other attacks on ICE and Border Protection facilities this year, as well as the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk two weeks ago.<\/p>\n \u201cIn America, we disagree that\u2019s fine, that\u2019s the democratic process but your political opponents are not Nazis,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to learn to work together without demonizing each other, without attacking each other.\u201d<\/p>\n Gabby Giffords<\/a>, the former Arizona congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt in 2011, expressed condolences for the victims in the shooting at the ICE facility. She also cited the administration\u2019s \u201ccruel and inhumane immigration policy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhile we await more information, it\u2019s clear our country is in the middle of a gun crime crisis\u2014and I urge our leaders to take action immediately,\u201d Giffords said in an X post<\/a>.<\/p>\n Investigators found rounds near the suspected shooter\u2019s body that had messages \u201cthat are anti-ICE in nature,\u201d said Joseph Rothrock, special agent in charge of the Dallas FBI field office.\u00a0<\/p>\n The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of targeted violence, Rothrock said. \u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThis is just the most recent example of this type of attack,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n FBI Director Kash Patel said an \u201cinitial review of the evidence shows an ideological motive behind this attack.\u201d<\/p>\n He posted images on X of ammunition located at the scene, including one inscribed with the phrase \u201cANTI ICE.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMore updates will be forthcoming,\u201d Patel added<\/p>\n The FBI is involved with the investigation into the deadly shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas, agency officials announced.<\/p>\n \u201cThe FBI is fully engaged, in conjunction with our state and federal law enforcement partners, at the crime scene in Dallas,\u201d FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a statement on X.<\/p>\n Multiple injured, at least one killed in Dallas ICE detention shooting<\/p>\n At least one fatality and multiple injuries were reported at an ICE detention center in Dallas.<\/p>\n In July, an ICE facility near the Dallas-Fort Worth area was attacked in a shooting that wounded a local police officer.<\/p>\n Federal officials say a \u201cviolent group\u201d launched a coordinated attack on the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, firing dozens of rounds at the facility and striking an Alvarado police officer in the neck. More than 10 people have been charged in connection with the incident.<\/p>\n ICE facilities nationwide have been the site of protests, which at times have turned violent with clashes breaking out between federal officers and demonstrators. White House officials say there’s been\u00a0a<\/a>\u00a0700% increase in assaults on<\/a> immigration agents amid the Trump administration\u2019s expansive deportation campaign.<\/p>\n The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a national civil rights organization for Latinos, condemned the attack at the ICE facility.<\/p>\n \u201cViolence is never the answer, and our nation must not normalize these horrific acts,\u201d Roman Palomares, LULAC national president and chairman of the organization\u2019s board, said in a statement. “We grieve with the families of the victims and urge Americans to lower the temperature in our public discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n LULAC was founded nearly 100 years ago in Texas.<\/p>\n – Eduardo Cuevas<\/p>\n Last month, the Dallas ICE field office that was targeted in Wednesday\u2019s attack issued a shelter-in-place order after a man approached the building and claimed to have an explosive device in his backpack, officials said.<\/p>\n The Department of Homeland Security said that on Aug. 25 a man approached the ICE facility and showed a security officer what he claimed to be a \u201cdetonator\u201d on his wrist.\u00a0A bomb squad was dispatched to the scene and local law enforcement officers arrested suspect Bratton Dean Wilkinson, 36.<\/p>\n Government officials in the aftermath of the shooting said that attacks against the immigration agency “must stop.”<\/p>\n “While we don\u2019t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop,” Noem said.<\/p>\n “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families,” Vice President JD Vance said.<\/p>\n Sen.
