And on Sept. 27, you can experience one of them: fishing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B5YVZZBBYJHKNA4PTLLPXHUP64\">To celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is waiving the $25 freshwater fishing license fee on Saturday for residents and non-residents alike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DYJR63ANXNA37AA5E4JLQUEC2E\">If you\u2019re an experienced angler with a fishing license, it\u2019s a great opportunity to get a friend or family member hooked on the sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AH2VZVFMWFGYXOHRACHQTW4XRM\">\u201cFree fishing days are the perfect time for newcomers to learn to freshwater fish or for experienced anglers to bring others outdoors to enjoy the many abundant waterways across New York,\u201d said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"23LM7B526BDSRFT4ZESDOYAAME\">Saturday\u2019s free fishing day is the fifth of six held annually. The last free fishing day of 2025 is on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QUEXDOMFHBFM5MG2JCKGPS64GA\">You won\u2019t need a license of free fishing days, but you will need to obey all other <a href=\"https:\/\/dec.ny.gov\/things-to-do\/freshwater-fishing\/regulations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fishing regulations<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SRFLGMURVJGLZBSVVOPPCZ3PO4\">Don\u2019t have fishing equipment? <a href=\"https:\/\/dec.ny.gov\/things-to-do\/freshwater-fishing\/learn-to-fish\/i-fish-ny-programs#loaner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Borrow fishing gear<\/a> for the day from one of the many providers statewide!<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V4U4Y4ACU5HAVJVGF3TXK3QYOE\">There are more than 7,500 lakes and ponds and 70,000 miles of rivers and streams to fish in New York, so you won\u2019t have to go far to get fish fever. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YABB2QYD6JBDRH6GGJWIDWE4MQ\">In addition to free fishing days, DEC and its partners hold free fishing clinics throughout the year where you can learn about local fishing opportunities, how to catch fish, fishing safety, aquatic conservation, and relevant fishing regulations<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OUP5STGTPRARRD5RG5DHKL2XZU\">DEC maintains <a href=\"https:\/\/dec.ny.gov\/things-to-do\/freshwater-fishing\/learn-to-fish\/free-clinics#Events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dec.ny.gov\/things-to-do\/freshwater-fishing\/learn-to-fish\/free-clinics#Events\">a full list of learn-to-fish programs<\/a>.
