However, such indirect dating methods introduce uncertainties.<\/p>\n<p>First, these materials may have been deposited long before or after the eggs were laid. Earth Sci., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Being able to directly and precisely date the eggs (despite the sediments around them not being particularly radioactive) offers a unique view of the past.<\/p>\n<p>The Upper Cretaceous spanned from around 100 million years ago to around 66 million years ago, to that fateful day when an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-finally-know-where-the-asteroid-that-killed-the-dinosaurs-came-from\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid ended the dinosaurs<\/a>&#8216; reptilian reign.<\/p>\n<p>Studying this timeline is essential. Despite the pop-media misnomer, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/giant-dinosaurs-were-riddled-with-a-devastating-disease-fossils-show\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cretaceous Period<\/a> is the real Jurassic Park. The area holds over 3,000 partially exposed, generally intact dinosaur eggs. They&#8217;re also remarkably abundant and varied, nestled within different types of rocks and displaying diverse shell structures and nesting styles.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Qinglongshan&#8217;s eggs had been laid by a still-mysterious species known as Placoolithus tumiaolingensis, though it&#8217;s uncertain what species laid the eggs dated in this study.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Egg_clutch_sampled_for_chronological_studies._Credit_Dr._Bi_Zhao-642x428.webp.webp\" alt=\"Multiple eggs in sand\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-174938\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The egg clutch that was studied. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/news\/2025\/09\/11\/85-million-year-old-dino-eggs-understanding-cretaceous-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Bi Zhao<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s embarrassment of eggs offers scientists a vital land-based record of the late Cretaceous, which was also a time of dynamic  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/climate-change\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73046\" data-postid=\"174933\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">climate change<\/a>. This period saw increased volcanic activity, a depletion of oxygen in the oceans, and significant global cooling.<\/p>\n<p>This cooling seems to have reduced dinosaurian diversity and may have affected the number of eggs laid by certain species at Qinglongshang and elsewhere.
