{"id":253938,"date":"2025-09-25T15:55:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T15:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/253938\/"},"modified":"2025-09-25T15:55:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T15:55:09","slug":"tv-series-adaptation-of-sony-movie-in-works-at-atomic-cartoons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/253938\/","title":{"rendered":"TV Series Adaptation Of Sony Movie In Works At Atomic Cartoons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>EXCLUSIVE:<\/strong> Ash Brannon and Chris Buck\u2019s Academy Award-nominated animated mockumentary feature Surf\u2019s Up is set for the small screen treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/thunderbird-entertainment\/\" id=\"auto-tag_thunderbird-entertainment\" data-tag=\"thunderbird-entertainment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thunderbird Entertainment<\/a> Group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/atomic-cartoons\/\" id=\"auto-tag_atomic-cartoons\" data-tag=\"atomic-cartoons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atomic Cartoons<\/a> is developing Surf\u2019s Up: The Series, an animated show based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/sony-pictures-animation\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sony-pictures-animation\" data-tag=\"sony-pictures-animation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Pictures Animation<\/a> and Columbia Pictures film from 2007. The comedy series will target kids aged 6-9 with 11-minute episodes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tLienne Sawatsky, Dan Williams, and John Hazlett, the trio behind animated children\u2019s series\u2019 The Guava Juice Show, are writing the adaptation, and will serve as showrunners. Jennifer Twiner McCarron, CEO and Chair of Thunderbird Entertainment, will exec produce alongside Atomic Cartoons\u2019 Joel Bradley and Aaron Behl and Sony\u2019s Rick Mischel. Kitty Walsh will be co-executive producer for Atomic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe original Surf\u2019s Up starred the likes of Shia LeBeouf, Jeff Bridges,\u00a0Zooey Deschanel,\u00a0Jon Heder and and\u00a0James Woods, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature 18 years ago. It parodied surf documentaries such as Riding Giants, following a teenage northern rockhopper penguin, Cody Maverick, who dreams of becoming a professional surfer by competing in the Big Z Memorial competition on Pen Gu Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe series will follow an over-confident teen penguin named Flip, who teams a zany bunch of young surfers in his attempt to become a surf legend. Things go spectacularly wrong and the wipeouts are spectacular, so they instead they build their own surf community on Pen Gu Island. Characters from the movie such as Cody, Big Z and Chicken Joe will return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cOur team at Atomic is thrilled to be working on Surf\u2019s Up: The Series and for the opportunity to introduce these adored characters to the small screen, reaching new and existing fans of the iconic animated film,\u201d said Twiner McCarron, who is also the CEO of Atomic in addition to Thunderbird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cLienne, Dan and John are passionate about only two things in life \u2013 penguins and surfing,\u201d added Behl. \u201cIt was undeniable that they were the write team \u2013 pun intended \u2013 to adapt Surf\u2019s Up as a hilarious animated series.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAtomic has bases in Vancouver, Ottawa and L.A., and is known for the likes of The Last Kids on Earth, Rocket Saves the Day and Mermicorno: Starfall, which is currently in production. It has also worked on brands such as LEGO, My Little Pony and CoComelon.
