(AP) \u2014 NASA\u2019s first radar images from a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nasa-india-radar-satellite-launch-13fcfc05fbefdd153a37a6a4a9c45a16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Earth-mapping satellite<\/a> show the Maine coast and North Dakota farmland in incredible detail.<\/p>\n<p>The pictures, released Thursday, are from a spacecraft that rocketed into <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/nasa-and-indias-space-agency-launch-radar-satellite-to-map-earths-land-and-ice-e6f41a7c277b4641ad4723e14213400b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">orbit from India<\/a> two months ago. <\/p>\n<p>The joint U.S.-Indian mission, worth $1.3 billion, will survey virtually all of the world\u2019s land and ice masses multiple times. By tracking even the slightest shifts in land and ice, the satellite will give forecasters and first responders a leg up in dealing with floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/texas-floods-extreme-weather-attitudes-preparations-cc9d55c1f2440d78e01dcc65ec748112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other disasters<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>NASA said these first pictures are a preview of what\u2019s to come once science operations begin in November. <\/p>\n<p>The satellite, flying 464 miles (747 kilometers) high in a near polar orbit, is called NISAR, short for NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar.
