Katie Palmer reports on two efforts to prove out the potential:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A large randomized controlled trial will explore the value of AI-aided mammography in screening for breast cancer. The technology is already widely used in the U.S.,\u00a0but the best evidence that it\u2019s useful comes from Europe. The $16 million trial is funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/09\/24\/breast-cancer-artificial-intelligence-mammogram-pcori-ucla\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read more on what researchers may find here.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Next month, NYU Langone Health will begin checking bone density in CT scans of people over 65 for osteoporosis, a condition that often goes undetected until someone breaks a bone. The health system may expand the work if it\u2019s proven to help. This kind of opportunistic screening, which repurposes otherwise acquired scans, could be used to identify many treatable conditions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/09\/25\/artificial-intelligence-nyu-ct-scan-osteoporosis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Katie\u2019s interview is worth a read<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2018HIPAA compliant\u2019\u00a0and other health data myths<\/p>\n<p>A company marketing itself as \u201cHIPAA compliant\u201d may be a good sign it doesn\u2019t know what its talking about, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/09\/24\/hipaa-compliant-myth-health-privacy-fallacies-ai-prognosis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brittany Trang reports<\/a>. There\u2019s no government body that certifies that a company\u2019s practices are in line with the 1996 patient data privacy law. The commonly used phrase sends a cold shiver down the back of lawyers who know that any claim of 100% compliance is likely misleading.
