Luong now orders three to four times more matcha than the 55-pound shipments he routinely purchased four months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Customer demand for matcha took him by surprise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve run out of matcha a few times,\u201d Luong said. \u201cWhenever we do run out, customers are always a little bit sad, but everyone understands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shop owners and employees across the city with knowledge of their shop\u2019s matcha orders say demand for the bright-green tea has surged as matcha producers overseas struggle to keep up. Its popularity has matcha spots buying and stocking more to whisk away worries.<\/p>\n<p>Retail sales for matcha in the United States nearly doubled from <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/matcha-japan-china-prices-shortages-tea-ca3b9ab64eb6f03b44b2d62ca33a6516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three years ago<\/a>, and global demand is rising with no sign of slowing down, according to multiple market research firms.<\/p>\n<p>But China and Japan\u2019s tea industries, two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intellectualmarketinsights.com\/blog\/leading-companies-in-the-global-matcha-market-2025-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">world\u2019s largest matcha producers<\/a>, face challenges, the Associated Press and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/life\/2025\/02\/23\/food-drink\/matcha-shortage-global-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Japan Times<\/a> reported. Labor shortages in China limit matcha production despite having an abundance of crops. (John Forbes | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the season, matcha alone can earn nearly a quarter of Ampersand\u2019s daily revenue, Luong said.<\/p>\n<p>After Luong learned customers\u2019 preferences, he has kept a healthy matcha stock. (John Forbes | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Tara Hennessy, inventory and ordering lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/cherry-coffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cherry Coffee<\/a> on Magnolia Avenue, said she started to keep a surplus of matcha, just in case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince we\u2019re running into shortages, we don\u2019t want to have one bag (leftover before restocking),\u201d Hennessy said.<\/p>\n<p>Hennessy said the cost of buying a shipment of matcha rose nearly $50 per bag near the start of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tariffs levied against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2025\/06\/trumps-us-china-trade-tariffs-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationaltradeinsights.com\/2025\/09\/trump-finalizes-japan-trade-deal-with-15-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japan<\/a> raised the price of matcha even more.<\/p>\n<p>Boneta said the cost also increased for The Legal Cafe, and customers saw up to a 50-cent price increase for matcha drinks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the short supply, the tea\u2019s popularity is good business for local shops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving matcha within our menu has been a great asset, and we hope it continues to grow,\u201d Luong said.<\/p>\n<p>Disclosure: The owner of Cherry Coffee, Katherine Morris, is the wife of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/about\/board-of-directors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fort Worth Report board<\/a> member Jonathan Morris.<\/p>\n<p>News decisions are made independently of our board members and financial supporters.
