{"id":254967,"date":"2025-09-26T01:31:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T01:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/254967\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T01:31:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T01:31:15","slug":"aspiring-san-antonio-surgeons-find-inspiration-from-local-robots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/254967\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspiring San Antonio surgeons find inspiration from local robots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Local high school students got some unique hands-on experience Thursday at Westover Hills Baptist Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Health science students from Brennan High School got to test out a $5 million surgical robotics system: da Vinci 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cMy heart was beating fast, out of excitement mostly,\u201d student Elia Lukose said. \u201cIt felt very exhilarating. I loved it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Lukose is a junior at Brennan High School, aspiring to become an orthopedic nurse practitioner. She was the first student to take the controls of the da Vinci 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The da Vinci 5 is the latest model of the system being used every day at the hospital, allowing surgeons to go into the body without having to make huge or major incisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Instead of the surgeon\u2019s hands, specially designed instruments attached to slender robotic arms enter the body through smaller incisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Dr. Michael Keller, Baptist Health System\u2019s colorectal surgeon, said technology like the da Vinci 5 will be the standard in training for new surgeons across the board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Keller believes students interested in health care should be introduced to the new technology and the industry sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou can romanticize what you want to do,\u201d Keller said, \u201cbut until you actually get to see it, the good and the bad, that\u2019s when you truly realize that\u2019s what your calling is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Brennan science teacher Schillen Goodlin, who accompanied students to the hospital demonstration, agreed with Keller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis gives them exposure to come out, see what it actually looks like in real time and see what, you know, what the world\u2019s gonna look like when they get out of high school,\u201d Goodlin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Thursday\u2019s event was held in hopes of inspiring and encouraging the students to become surgeons, Goodlin and hospital officials said, but it also highlighted other specializations needed in the medical field, such as programmers and engineers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe truth is, the surgeon is at the very end of the process,\u201d Keller said. \u201cThere are millions and millions of codes that are written to work the robot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI can only imagine how many engineers it must take to have created or maintain the robotics itself,\u201d Kellar continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Both said the everyday interaction with technology like AI, combined with opportunities to see the different types of applications of technology up close in medicine and other fields, can help students find a path to success in life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Read also:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by KSAT &#8211;
