{"id":255109,"date":"2025-09-26T02:49:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T02:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/255109\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T02:49:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T02:49:09","slug":"philadelphia-nonprofit-hosts-talk-on-unity-amid-political-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/255109\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia nonprofit hosts talk on unity amid political violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>On the same night <a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/post\/former-vice-president-presidential-nominee-kamala-harris-brings-book-tour-north-philadelphia\/17880645\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kamala Harris was in town<\/a> to discuss her new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelionsstory.org\/healing-and-justice-event\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">civil rights advocates gathered in Philadelphia<\/a> to discuss the social and political tensions following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/09\/10\/nx-s1-5537045\/charlie-kirk-shot-utah\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Kirk\u2019s death<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Fitler Club served as the gathering point for conversation and as a fundraiser for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelionsstory.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lion\u2019s Story<\/a>, a nonprofit based in Philadelphia that holds similar events to address tough issues within communities.\n<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s event featured brothers <a href=\"https:\/\/eji.org\/bryan-stevenson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gse.upenn.edu\/faculty\/howard-c-stevenson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Howard<\/a> Stevenson, who grew up in southern Delaware. Bryan leads the Equal Justice Initiative, while Howard co-founded Lion\u2019s Story and teaches at the University of Pennsylvania.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The two brothers told WHYY News that the conversation was \u201crelevant to what\u2019s happening in the world right now,\u201d contrasting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/09\/13\/nx-s1-5507125\/the-supreme-court-clears-the-way-for-ice-agents-to-treat-race-as-grounds-for-immigration-stops\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the racial tensions present today<\/a> with what they experienced growing up.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are having a hard time talking about some honesty regarding the history of hate,\u201d Howard said. \u201cHaving a brother that was a champion for justice and the way that we talk to each other and remind each other of things that we\u2019ve seen over and over again, it\u2019s a little weird, but it\u2019s also a blessing that these are the times that we need courage, we need a recipe for fighting back against injustice and dehumanization.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe grew up at the end of the Jim Crow era in a kind of rural, segregated community,\u201d Bryan said. \u201cOur great-grandparents were enslaved.
