{"id":255618,"date":"2025-09-26T07:45:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T07:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/255618\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T07:45:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T07:45:15","slug":"with-rural-america-starting-to-see-huge-financial-losses-from-tariff-policies-trump-offers-vague-aid-package-to-farmers-in-the-heartland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/255618\/","title":{"rendered":"With rural America starting to see huge financial losses from tariff policies, Trump offers vague aid package to farmers in the heartland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">President Donald Trump is pledging to use tariff revenue to bail out farmers reeling from the impact of the ongoing trade war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to take some of that tariff money that we made, we\u2019re going to give it to our farmers, who are, for a little while, going to be hurt until the tariffs kick into their benefit,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday. \u201cSo we\u2019re going to make sure that our farmers are in great shape, because we\u2019re taking in a lot of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Agriculture secretary Brooke <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/rollins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rollins;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Rollins<\/a> said last week the administration was <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/09\/19\/trump-administration-tariff-revenue-farmer-bail-out\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:weighing this action;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">weighing this action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The White House did not immediately respond to Fortune\u2019s request for comment about details regarding the bailout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Farmers\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/04\/18\/trump-trade-war-tariffs-farmers-china-nafta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:historically loyal constituency;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">historically loyal constituency<\/a> of Trump\u2019s\u2014have sounded the alarms about how the administration\u2019s tariffs exacerbated trade disputes that have endangered U.S. export markets as production costs remain stubbornly high or even increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe frustration is overwhelming,\u201d the American Soybean Association (ASA) President Caleb Ragland said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/soygrowers.com\/news-releases\/asa-responds-to-argentina-soybean-actions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cThe farm economy is suffering while our competitors supplant the United States in the biggest soybean import market in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecScottBessent\/status\/1970821535507026177\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said on X;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said on X<\/a> on Wednesday the U.S. would provide financial support to Argentina as it tries to stabilize its economy. As part of its stabilization efforts, Argentina eliminated its export tax on soybeans, and China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/chinese-buyers-book-least-10-argentine-soybean-cargoes-sources-say-2025-09-23\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reportedly ordered 10 cargoes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reportedly ordered 10 cargoes<\/a> of the crop from the South America country. China received nearly a quarter of the U.S. soybean exports in 2024, but has not ordered any U.S. soybeans since May. The country has instead turned to cheaper alternatives from Argentina and Brazil, which have continued to gobble up market share from the U.S. over the last decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The National Corn Growers Association has been <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/30\/rural-america-economic-crisis-farmers-agriculture-exports-trump-trade-war-china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:similarly distraught;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">similarly distraught<\/a>, with corn prices plunging more than 50% from their 2022 peak while production costs have decreased by only 3% in the same timespan. Corn and soybeans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/chart-gallery\/chart-detail?chartId=76946\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:accounted for 45%;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">accounted for 45%<\/a> of the U.S.\u2019s cash crop receipts in 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Meanwhile, input costs for production continue to eke up. August <a href=\"https:\/\/ageconsearch.umn.edu\/record\/364771?v=pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:data;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">data<\/a> from the North Dakota State University Agricultural Trade Monitor indicates tariffs rates for self-propelled machines like tractors are at 15%, while rates for herbicides and some pesticides are at 25% as a result of ongoing trade disputes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Trump\u2019s previous actions to bail out farmers have seen mixed success. Many of the problems plaguing U.S. farmers today are a redux of the issues that arose in the president\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">U.S. farmers lost $27 billion in agricultural exports between mid-2018 and 2019 as a result of a trade war with China, according to a 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/ers.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/_laserfiche\/publications\/102980\/ERR-304.pdf?v=13480\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:report;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">report<\/a> from the USDA. The first Trump administration responded to the crisis with a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/10\/23\/trump-debate-china-farm-subsidies-pays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:$28 billion bailout;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">$28 billion bailout<\/a> for farmers, effectively erasing the immediate economic losses. But the market erosion from the initial trade war is lasting, farmers and economists said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe takeaway that we have from the data of the last time we did this is that the U.S. lost about 20% of our market share, and it never came back,\u201d Todd Main, the director of market development at the Illinois Soybean Association, told Fortune.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">According to Wendong Zhang, an associate professor of applied economics and policy at Cornell University\u2019s SC Johnson School of Business, financial support for farmers today would have similar consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cIt will compensate for the immediate economic losses due to tariffs, but it doesn\u2019t necessarily improve the long-term competitiveness of agriculture on the global stage,\u201d Zhang told Fortune.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Farmers have made their stance clear, arguing a trade deal with China is the best way to sustain the agricultural export industry, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/international-markets-us-trade\/us-agricultural-trade\/us-agricultural-trade-at-a-glance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reached $176 billion;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reached $176 billion<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cWe can grow anything. What we really want is good relations with our trading partners,\u201d Illinois Soybean Association\u2019s Main said. \u201cWe want markets.
