When Staley suggested that Harris would be president one day in the future, the audience roared.<\/p>\n
\u201cI equate you running for [the] presidency as one of those moments where the American people have to be prepared for that moment,\u201d Staley said. \u201cNow that you\u2019ve been through it, I hope you give it another shot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harris said that she learned what it meant to \u201cbreak barriers\u201d during her first run in 2020.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you break things, you get cut and you may bleed and it is worth it every time,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s worth it every time, but it\u2019s not without pain \u2026 it\u2019s important that they are prepared for the fact that it will not just be about you being the first without a lot of pain and perhaps unfairness as people get adjusted to something they\u2019ve never seen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harris took a moment to criticize Trump, but also what she said is the coordinated effort behind his policies designed to benefit \u201cbillionaires.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels chaotic, but do understand what we are witnessing and experiencing is a high velocity event that is about a swift implementation of a plan that has been decades in the making,\u201d she said. \u201cThis didn\u2019t just come up and happen overnight. The Federalist Society, the Heritage Foundation. We talked about Project 2025. They didn\u2019t write that thing overnight. That has been decades in the making.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Harris didn\u2019t divulge her thinking over future plans, she said she would continue in the fight against \u201cdarkness.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes the fight takes a while,\u201d she said. \u201cSo we don\u2019t give up. We just understand what we\u2019ve got in front of us and what we have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018Disappointment\u2019 and \u2018empowerment\u2019<\/p>\n
Mary Caitlin Gagliardi made the trip from Baltimore, Maryland, because she couldn\u2019t get tickets to Harris\u2019s stop in Washington, D.C., but said she was \u201creally inspired\u201d hearing from Harris.<\/p>\n
Gagliardi is listening to the audio version of the book, which Harris herself narrates.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels a little bit more raw and passionate,\u201d she said. \u201cHearing her, I feel like I\u2019m in the book with her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gagliardi said she was \u201castounded and disappointed\u201d to hear about the \u201clack of support from some of the Democrats, some of her colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that she\u2019s right, the Democrats need to have a united front on issues and move forward, and I feel like we are going to be the catalyst for the change, and I feel very inspired to move this party forward,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sylvia Alston, who traveled from central New Jersey, said she wanted to hear how Harris \u201cwas feeling\u201d and found it disappointing that the Biden camp didn\u2019t do more to support her.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were loyal to Joe Biden in a way that they were not loyal to her,\u201d she said. \u201cShe talked about the disappointment in a way that we hadn\u2019t heard of how he hadn\u2019t stood up for her, how his team didn\u2019t stand up for her when the media and the right were maligning her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, Alston said Harris\u2019 story felt empowering \u2014 not just for Black women, but for anyone facing challenges and working to move the country forward in difficult times.<\/p>\n
