{"id":25591,"date":"2025-06-29T22:37:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-29T22:37:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/25591\/"},"modified":"2025-06-29T22:37:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-29T22:37:16","slug":"nyc-pride-parade-fills-streets-with-glitter-and-glee-as-nypd-wannabe-marchers-protest-uniform-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/25591\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Pride parade fills streets with glitter and glee &#8212; as NYPD wannabe marchers protest uniform ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than a million people filled Manhattan on Sunday for the largest annual Pride parade in North America \u2014 while LGBTQ cops turned out in droves to protest from the sidelines.<\/p>\n<p>As revelers dressed in glitter, drag and other festive attire packed the streets surrounding the downtown parade route, the officers were furious that they are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/27\/us-news\/tisch-slams-exclusion-of-gay-cops-in-uniform-at-nyc-pride-march\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still barred from marching<\/a> in their NYPD uniforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes a tremendous amount of courage to be out. It takes an even more tremendous amount of courage to be out in uniform,\u201d said NYPD Detective Brian Downey, president of the Gay Officers Action League.<\/p>\n<p>More than a million people pack the streets of downtown Manhattan for this year\u2019s Pride parade. Michael Nigro<\/p>\n<p>But the party remained uninterrupted for the throngs of sanctioned participants as the parade snaked through Madison Square Park, down Fifth Avenue, through Greenwich Village and up Seventh Avenue \u2014 with rainbow flags and smiles flying from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m out here making sure our voices are loud and proud and heard. It\u2019s more important now than ever,\u201d said 30-year-old Audacity Mansfield, who wore a \u201cMr. Gay New Jersey\u201d sash won at a pageant earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch (third from left) joins queer officers protesting after they were barred from marching in uniform. DANIEL WILLIAM MCKNIGHT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t have pride, then we don\u2019t really have anything,\u201d Mansfield said. \u201cIf we can\u2019t be proud of who we are or if we can\u2019t be proud of our community, what are we out here for?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s parade fell on the 10th anniversary of the legalization of gay marriage in the US and also commemorated the 1969 Stonewall riots \u2014 which helped spark the country\u2019s  gay-rights movement \u2014 with the theme \u201cRise Up: Pride in Protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But one part of the queer community that was left out of the festivities for the fifth year in a row were uniformed LGBTQ NYPD officers who were told by organizers they couldn\u2019t march in their blues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not be erased,\u201d read signs carried by cops watching from the sidelines, along with others reading, \u201cLet gay cops back into march,\u201d and, \u201cOur uniform is our protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the NYPD controversy, the parade is filled with joy and smiles as people turn out in droves to celebrate. Stephen Yang<\/p>\n<p>NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/02\/us-news\/lgbtq-groups-march-under-own-banner-for-first-time-in-staten-island-st-paddys-parade-huge-day-for-the-queer-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turned out to support the officers<\/a>, calling the decision to bar them \u201cunbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an absolute disgrace,\u201d Tisch said, saying it was ironic that a parade about inclusivity is keeping people out. \u201cThese officers standing behind me who have been pillars of reform in the community for decades have been excluded and told they are not welcome to walk in the uniforms they wear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ban was put in place in 2021 over ongoing anti-cop sentiment from the George Floyd protests the summer before. <\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Pride parade was filled with the usual fare of glamour, glitter and colorful costumes. Michael Nigro<\/p>\n<p>Parade organizer Heritage Pride claims it doesn\u2019t want parade-marching officers carrying weapons, which they have to have on them as part of their uniform requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Scores of on-duty armed cops protect the parade-goers.<\/p>\n<p>Tisch called organizers\u2019 excuse \u201cnonsense\u201d and characterized it as a \u201cpublicity stunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeritage of Pride knows full well that when officers wear their uniforms, those uniforms can be magnets,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is about personal safety for our officers and public safety that officers don their uniforms and carry their service weapons with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Downey said it was \u201cpainful\u201d to have to protest the parade \u2014 and that queer officers are among the most courageous members of the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been painful for four years now,\u201d he said. \u201cTelling folks that they can show up not as they are is not in the spirit of pride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The parade marched down Fifth Avenue, cut across Greenwich village and then moved up Seventh Avenue. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone standing behind me protests every day by going into the system that has historically was not for them. They go in and force change upon that system. They force that system to deal with that,\u201d Downey added. <\/p>\n<p>Downey \u2014 echoing others \u2014 also said it was outrageous that the parade would ask the NYPD to keep the parade safe but wouldn\u2019t let officers march in uniform.<\/p>\n<p>Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani stopped by the protest and greeted Tisch and some protesting cops \u2014 but was snubbed by at least two officers.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams \u2014 who previously voiced support for GOAL\u2019s push to let officers march in uniform \u2014 joined the parade but was booed at times and given the middle finger as he walked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric Adams doesn\u2019t care about gay people!\u201d a woman yelled, while others called him a \u201cTrump lover\u201d and screamed, \u201cMamdani for mayor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the controversy, Sunday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/06\/us-news\/maga-gays-feel-left-out-of-lgbt-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parade was the festive and positive <\/a>celebration many wait all year and travel from across the world to attend. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just proud of the energy,\u201d said paradegoer Paul Mcgrorety. \u201cI love seeing smiles and just the pridefulness of everyone here.
