The Department of Homeland Security took to social media on Saturday to try its hand at comedy. The department, which has been slammed for its masked arrests that look more like kidnappings<\/a>, posted an image trolling critics of the so-called \u201cAlligator Alcatraz<\/a>\u201d or \u201cGator Gitmo\u201d plan. <\/p>\n

The image features a row of four alligators in ICE hats standing in front of a concrete prison surrounded by a razor-wire-topped fence. It appears to be AI-generated\u2014unless their photographer had a really good reptile handler. <\/p>\n

The \u201cjoke\u201d is in reference to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 GOP-championed plan to open a new migrant detention facility in the heart of the Sunshine State\u2019s alligator-infested Everglades swamplands. <\/p>\n

Like an edgelord trying out their new tight five, the joke failed to land, with critics tearing into the lack of empathy on display.<\/p>\n

\u201cA horrendous lack of humanity,\u201d Brett Bruen, a former U.S. diplomat, wrote in response to the post. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs if the detention center being built wasn\u2019t already a disgrace in a civilized society,\u201d one X user wrote<\/a>, \u201cwe\u2019re allowing a federal agency to mock and make light of a situation involving human lives.\u201d Author Karen Piper<\/a> simply described the image as \u201csadism\u201d.<\/p>\n

DJ Mark Farina described<\/a> the move as characteristic of a \u201cDisgustingly dangerous administration run by a bunch of childish morons\u201d. <\/p>\n

Even among Trump supporters, the reaction was subdued. \u201cThis administration is doing good things, but the utter lack of seriousness of your comms team really sucks,\u201d said one former U.S. soldier<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Two environmental groups have sued<\/a> to stop the $450 million-a-year project, which they claim will claim will do \u201cdirect and indirect harm to nearby wetlands, wildlife, and air and water quality.\u201d DeSantis\u2019 spokesperson has said that they plan to oppose the lawsuit in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got nowhere to go,\u201d DeSantis said of any potential escapee migrants who might try to flee the facility. Undocumented migrants are expected to be housed in plastic tents in the sweltering Florida heat during their detainment. <\/p>\n

Whether or not the facility and its scaly guards will be \u201ccoming soon!,\u201d as DHS wrote, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
