officers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Instances of aggravated home burglaries have increased by 21 per cent\u00a0year-on-year in Melbourne, according to\u00a0Victoria&#8217;s crime statistics released on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There has also been a push to overhaul the state&#8217;s existing self-defence laws to allow people to defend themselves and their assets during home invasions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It comes after, football legend Mick Malthouse used an exercise bar to ward off alleged offenders during an alleged home invasion this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Another intruder was shot dead during a home invasion in Donnybrook last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Residents from\u00a0Mildura also pursued teenagers accused of stealing motorcycles from a local business earlier in the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Libertarian Party Leader David Limbrick is pushing for a Castle Doctrine, similar to that in the UK and US, to be introduced in Victoria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-32265307a2583fdd\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/102472243-15135881-image-a-2_1758879462275.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\" alt=\"The woman had allegedly broken into the Melbourne apartment armed with a knife before she was restrained (stock pictured)\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">The woman had allegedly broken into the Melbourne apartment armed with a knife before she was restrained (stock pictured)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The\u00a0Castle Doctrine would create a law that affords Victorians the opportunity to forcibly ward off home intruders without consequence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Although we don&#8217;t yet know the details of what happened in this case, people defending their homes need certainty on what they can and can&#8217;t do,&#8217; Mr Limbrick <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"class\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/victoria\/knifewielding-burglar-dies-after-being-restrained-during-alleged-aggravated-burglary-of-berkeley-st-apartment\/news-story\/8b5bcf4e75118231ae948cb9872c70de?amp#\">told the Herald Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That&#8217;s exactly why the Libertarian Party recently tried to get the government to review self defence laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The popularity of the petition in support of castle laws in Victoria proves that Victorians want better certainty for these situations.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although the overall amount of non-aggravated burglaries had decreased across the last decade, the recent spike has been pinned on youth offenders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Police have attributed the rise in home invasions to this demographic based on\u00a0recent crime statistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Victorian Attorney-General, Sonya Kilkenny, however, defended the state&#8217;s existing self-defence laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Our self-defence laws here in Victoria are proportionate, and Victorians are encouraged \u2014 in fact we plead with Victorians \u2014 to please continue to call Victoria Police in any emergency situation,&#8217; she said in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Self-defence laws are about what is reasonable, what&#8217;s a reasonable amount of force in any situation. Those are our laws already in Victoria.
