At first glance, the move is confusing, but the pieces make some sense when you consider the direction of the Jazz.

So why would Utah do this? Well, they just drafted a guy who could develop into a potential cornerstone player. Do you really want to have Collin Sexton taking 12-14 shots from Ace Bailey or Walter Clayton Jr.? Jusuf Nurkic, if he ever even plays for Utah, is not taking shots from anyone. On top of that, Collin Sexton doesn’t strike me as a guy who is going to give up shots to a rookie during a contract season. This avoids any issues with that.

Another thing to consider is that this is a swap of two expiring contracts. Utah could potentially win the lottery this upcoming season. At that point, it’s likely Utah is off to the races and can go make some moves in free agency, especially when you consider all their young players on rookie-scale deals. Should we worry about a 2030 second-round pick when we could be acquiring legitimate role players to surround our stars next year? You might have been able to squeeze a late first from someone, but it would have had to come with a bad contract. And think about that, that 2030 second might actually be in the 50s. If Utah wins the lottery this year, they might be good in 2030, making that pick even less valuable.

Finally, there has to be something said for the defense. Sexton does not fit what this team needs to improve. He’s a terrible defender. This graphic from bball-index.com’s D-LeBron metric shows the five worst defenders over the last two seasons. What exactly were you getting for Sexton if you didn’t like this deal? There’s a case to be made that this was a fantastic move by the front office, which is dedicating itself to a plan.
