{"id":257447,"date":"2025-09-27T01:01:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T01:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/257447\/"},"modified":"2025-09-27T01:01:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T01:01:12","slug":"thunderstorms-expected-to-douse-phoenix-area-throughout-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/257447\/","title":{"rendered":"Thunderstorms expected to douse Phoenix area throughout day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2013 Thunderstorms are battering the Phoenix area with rain, hail, flooding and flight delays on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis threat\u2019s going to extend all the way into the early evening hours with multiple rounds of storms expected,\u201d Tom Frieders, meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM just before noon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSPhoenix\/status\/1971578153916416150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">After showers popped up<\/a> in northeast Maricopa County and Gila County in the early-morning hours, thunderstorms started developing on the west side around 10 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The NWS issued a series of severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings as storm activity intensified across the region throughout the day.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Storms have been rolling through the Valley on Friday, causing flooding in some areas, like this area that KTAR News Reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/balin_om?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">@balin_om<\/a> found in central Phoenix. <\/p>\n<p>The latest on the storms: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h9xrFJsMoi\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/h9xrFJsMoi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Qus3QlgufH\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/Qus3QlgufH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 KTAR News 92.3 (@KTAR923) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KTAR923\/status\/1971677360119521740?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">September 26, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the morning we\u2019ve seen quite a bit of thunderstorm activity, mainly across the north and West Valley, so far, with severe thunderstorms (and) some flooding with the heavy rain with these storms,\u201d Frieders said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Large hail, up to 1.00-1.50&#8243;, is being observed with the severe storms moving through Phoenix. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/azwx?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">#azwx<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PqrkY0Q3hC\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/PqrkY0Q3hC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NWS Phoenix (@NWSPhoenix) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSPhoenix\/status\/1971640289069523278?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">September 26, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As a result of the flooding, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to multiple water rescues.<\/p>\n<p>Thunderstorms create significant issues for Sky Harbor travelers<\/p>\n<p>The thunderstorms prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ground flights to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on multiple occasions. As a result, the FAA issued <a href=\"https:\/\/nasstatus.faa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a ground delay advisory<\/a> covering flights to and from Phoenix for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA projected that flights to Sky Harbor will be delayed by an average of 75 minutes until 7 p.m. Arrivals were behind by over two hours on average when the delay advisory started and was expected to diminish as the day progressed.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the FAA said Phoenix departures were delayed by up to 45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>How much rain is falling during Friday\u2019s thunderstorms?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re expecting the strongest thunderstorms to continue all the way through early-evening hours, maybe upwards of till around 8 o\u2019clock at least, but we could still see some more showers and thunderstorms overnight,\u201d Frieders said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">95th Ave\/Olive Area of Peoria <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WuK8hAIGsw\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/WuK8hAIGsw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Charles Oliva (@Charles_OlivaAZ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Charles_OlivaAZ\/status\/1971636101866807316?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">September 26, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By midday, many areas had received over 1 inch of rain, including spots in central and south Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale and Cave Creek.<\/p>\n<p>About an inch of rain reportedly accumulated at Sky Harbor, which the NWS uses for the city\u2019s official readings, in under an hour. That downpour alone surpassed the 2025 monsoon season rainfall total heading into the day of 0.91 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Phoenix normally gets about 2.4 inches of rain during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/twc\/Monsoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">monsoon season<\/a>, which runs annually from June 15 to Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p>Frieders the hardest-hit spots could end up with over 3 inches of rain by the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to stress to everybody with the threat of this heavy rainfall and flash flooding, flash flooding can evolve real quickly when these storms move in,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, I just want to stress turn around, don\u2019t drown, never drive through flooded roadways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When does flood watch for metro Phoenix expire?<\/p>\n<p>Anticipating the thunderstorms, the NWS issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=AZZ543&amp;warncounty=AZC013&amp;firewxzone=AZZ132&amp;local_place1=Phoenix%20AZ&amp;product1=Flood+Watch&amp;lat=33.4483&amp;lon=-112.073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">flood watch<\/a> to run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>While the flood watch is limited to Friday, the possibility of rain remains in the forecast for much of the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChances really drop off by Sunday evening, and then zero chances next week,\u201d NWS meteorologist Ted Whittock told KTAR News on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the moisture, <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/weather-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the forecast<\/a> calls for high temperatures in the low 90s or upper 80s through the weekend, over 5 degrees below normal for this time of year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then we start to warm back up by Monday, but just into the lower 90s, and then maybe by the middle of next week will be in the mid-90s,\u201d Whittock said.<\/p>\n<p>KTAR News 92.3 FM\u2019s Ginia McFarland and Balin Overstolz McNair contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KTAR923\" data-show-count=\"false\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Follow @KTAR923<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We want to hear from you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Have a story idea or tip?
