{"id":258469,"date":"2025-09-27T10:11:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T10:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/258469\/"},"modified":"2025-09-27T10:11:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T10:11:08","slug":"editors-note-saving-a-piece-of-new-york-citys-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/258469\/","title":{"rendered":"Editor\u2019s Note: Saving a \u2018piece of New York City\u2019s history\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City &amp; State Publisher Tom Allon and I went on a mission Friday to save thousands of printed back issues of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westsidespirit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">West Side Spirit<\/a>, a weekly community newspaper Allon ran when he was president and co-owner of Manhattan Media.<\/p>\n<p>More than two dozen bound volume books of these old papers were destined to become homeless as the West Side Spirit\u2019s current owner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westsidespirit.com\/contact-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Straus News<\/a>, relocated to a smaller office in midtown Manhattan. \u201cWe saved a piece of New York City\u2019s history that was headed for extinction,\u201d Allon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is often said that journalism is the first draft of history, and we just saved the first draft of New York City\u2019s history from the \u201990s, 2000s, and into the 2010s,\u201d Allon told me proudly.<\/p>\n<p>The West Side Spirit and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourtownny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Our Town<\/a>, another weekly newspaper Allon ran when it was owned by Manhattan Media and which is now also a Straus publication, are the \u201cofficial newspapers of the West Side and East Side of Manhattan, (respectively),\u201d he explained. \u201cThey cover the local news that The New York Times, Daily News, Wall Street Journal, and others neglect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One possibility for where the papers could end up is the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LaGuardiaWagner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">LaGuardia and Wagner Archives<\/a>.
