{"id":258766,"date":"2025-09-27T12:57:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T12:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/258766\/"},"modified":"2025-09-27T12:57:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T12:57:10","slug":"nyc-educator-ridiculed-for-white-toxicity-can-sue-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/258766\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC educator ridiculed for &#8216;white toxicity&#8217; can sue: Judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An ex-educator claiming the de Blasio administration knowingly permitted \u201cracial harassment\u201d against white staffers in the public school system \u2014 during anti-bias training sessions and in the workplace \u2014 can sue NYC, a\u00a0federal appellate court ruled this week.<\/p>\n<p>The bombshell decision on Thursday overturned a lower-court\u2019s dismissal of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/10\/01\/fourth-white-doe-executive-sues-over-racial-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2019 lawsuit by Leslie Chislett,<\/a> a veteran administrator who led the Advanced Placement for All initiative in the city Department of Education. It paves the way for a trial or financial settlement with the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe presented evidence that would allow a reasonable juror to find that the DOE consistently ignored racial harassment of Caucasian employees during \u2018implicit bias\u2019 trainings and workplace interactions,\u201d the three-judge panel of the US 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals found.<\/p>\n<p>A federal appeals court reinstated a 2019 lawsuit by former NYC educator Leslie Chislett, who accused the de Blasio administration of condoning \u201cracial harassment\u201d against white staffers in the public school system. Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>Chislett has mixed feelings about the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the higher court\u2019s decision is a long-awaited vindication, it\u00a0does not restore to me the longtime career that I loved and was successful in,\u201d she told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew at the time that what the DOE and its complicit leaders were doing was horribly divisive and unlawful,\u201d she said, adding that former Mayor Bill de Blasio and his then-Chancellor Richard Carranza\u2019s \u201canti-white policies were translated by their ignorant leaders into my daily humiliation and ridicule \u2014 something that was deeply wounding, and that I will never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among multiple instances cited by the judges, a senior executive in the DOE\u2019s Office of Equity and Access was quoted as saying in a diversity training session: \u201cThere is white toxicity in the air, and we all breathe it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegative generalizations and stereotypes about white people were\u00a0targeted specifically at Chislett during the trainings\u201d in 2018, the judges found, when supervisors and staffers accused her of exhibiting traits of white supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>Chislett claims ex-Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s \u201canti-white policies\u201d led to her \u201cdaily humiliation and ridicule.\u201d David McGlynn<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Chislett disciplined or managed subordinates, she was allegedly called racist and labeled \u2018white and fragile,\u2019\u201d the decision states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow dare you approach me out of your white privilege!\u201d an underling is quoted as snapping at Chislett, who asked the staffer why she was late to a meeting she was supposed to help lead.<\/p>\n<p>Chislett alleged that several higher-ups \u2013 including then-Deputy Chancellor LaShawn Robinson, who is black \u2014 ignored or rejected her repeated complaints of hostility, which became \u201cunbearable,\u201d leading her to take a medical leave and finally quit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA rational jury could find that the administration condoned the racial harassment,\u201d the decision states.<\/p>\n<p>Chislett\u2019s lawyer, Davida Perry, said, \u201cWith this decision, the court has made it clear that discrimination based on race will not be accepted in any form.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ex-NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, who led the DOE from 2018 to 2021, was accused of demoting white administrators in favor of less-qualified persons of color.<\/p>\n<p>Perry represented three other white former DOE administrators who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/05\/28\/bombshell-suit-claims-carranzas-toxic-whiteness-purge-cost-doe-execs-their-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jointly sued the DOE,<\/a> claiming Carranza demoted them in favor of less-qualified persons of color.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/27\/us-news\/nyc-to-pay-2-1m-in-toxic-whiteness-discrimination-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city settled <\/a>with the three women in April 2024 for a total $2.1 million, or $700,000 each.<\/p>\n<p>Perry has not filed any similar lawsuits under Mayor Adams\u2019 administration, she said.\u00a0 \u201cThe policy we sued over was developed by Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza. To date, we have not received similar complaints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio and Carranza have denied anti-white policies.
