{"id":259430,"date":"2025-09-27T19:01:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T19:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/259430\/"},"modified":"2025-09-27T19:01:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T19:01:12","slug":"trump-directs-defense-secretary-to-deploy-troops-to-portland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/259430\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump directs defense secretary to deploy troops to Portland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-7eba4e\" class=\"body-graf\">President Donald Trump said Saturday that he was directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to \u201cprovide all necessary Troops\u201d to Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0feb39\" class=\"body-graf\">In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote that the troops would \u201cprotect War ravaged Portland\u201d and protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities that he claimed are \u201cunder siege from attack by Antifa and other domestic terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e62ab9\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump added that he is \u201cauthorizing Full Force, if necessary,\u201d but didn\u2019t clarify what that meant.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a12a05\" class=\"body-graf\">A spokesperson for the White House did not immediately respond to clarifying questions about which branch of the military would be deploying to Portland.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4817a1\" class=\"body-graf\">The president has repeatedly spoken negatively about Portland, including saying on Thursday that \u201canarchy\u201d is taking place in the West Coast city.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-be11b6\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cYou go out to Portland, people die out there. Many people have died over the years in Portland. Portland is, I don\u2019t know how anybody lives there. It\u2019s amazing, but it\u2019s, it\u2019s anarchy out there. That\u2019s what they want. They want anarchy,\u201d Trump said during remarks in the Oval Office on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eb091a\" class=\"body-graf\">Last week, in separate comments in the Oval Office, the president said people in Portland are \u201cout of control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5018b4\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cHave you seen Portland at all? If you take a look what\u2019s happening in Portland. It\u2019s, it has been going on for years. Just people out of control, crazy. We\u2019re going to stop that very soon,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ff3434\" class=\"body-graf\">Pentagon officials appeared to be surprised by the Truth Social post and told NBC News they were not aware of any new orders to send troops into Portland. The officials said they had no immediate information about any potential operation, including the size and scope of the mission or who, National Guard or active duty forces, would be deployed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/250927-portland-ice-protests-mn-1310-afd750.jpg\" alt=\"ICE Protests in Portland continue with interfaith solidarity march\" height=\"1200\" width=\"1800\"\/>Protesters march past the ICE facility in Portland on Aug. 23.John Rudoff \/ Sipa USA via Reuters file<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-51fbf8\" class=\"body-graf\">The move also comes after a gunman opened fire on the agency\u2019s field office in Dallas on Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/names-immigrant-victims-dallas-shooting-rcna233811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wounding two detainees and killing one detainee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-af648d\" class=\"body-graf\">Leaders in Portland on Friday urged residents to remain calm ahead of what they said was an expected surge in federal law enforcement to an ICE facility in the area.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-897660\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis is disappointing news,\u201d the city\u2019s mayor, Keith Wilson, said at a press conference Friday. \u201cWe did not ask for them to come. They are here without precedent or purpose. We have seen how their presence harms commerce and prosperity and opportunity in other cities like Washington, D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2a978a\" class=\"body-graf\">Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., also attended the press conference and urged residents to avoid confrontation with federal law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-84b822\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe are not going to take the bait,\u201d Merkley told reporters. The senator said it was OK to express views and protest, but it\u2019s \u201cbest done at a distance from these federal troops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e443b5\" class=\"body-graf\">On Saturday, after Trump&#8217;s announcement, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said that she was reaching out to the White House for more information, adding that &#8220;there is no national security threat in Portland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d4fcc5\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;My office is reaching out to the White House and Homeland Security for more information. We have been provided no information on the reason or purpose of any military mission. There is no national security threat in Portland. Our communities are safe and calm,&#8221; Kotek <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovTinaKotek\/status\/1971983803880296857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6bb52c\" class=\"body-graf\">In a separate statement, Wilson said that, &#8220;The number of necessary troops is zero, in Portland and any other American city.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-edade1\" class=\"body-graf\">The president has long been outspoken about his negative views toward Portland, a city that he declared in his first term to be an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2020\/10\/22\/portland-joins-seattle-new-york-in-lawsuit-challanging-trump-adminstrations-anarchist-jurisdiction-designation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">anarchist jurisdiction<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/250927-portland-ice-protests-mn-1313-662c9b.jpg\" alt=\"Tear gas fills the air as law enforcement responds to protesters at the ICE facility in Portland\" height=\"1201\" width=\"1800\"\/>Tear gas fills the air as law enforcement responds to protesters at the ICE facility in Portland on June 18.John Rudoff \/ Sipa USA via Reuters file<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f4c2b4\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump for months has railed against crime in American cities, threatening to surge federal law enforcement and troops to multiple cities run by Democratic mayors \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/donald-trump-threatens-chicago-deportations-department-war-crackdown-rcna229544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chicago<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/trump-threatens-military-baltimore-crime-key-bridge-funding-chicago-rcna226846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Baltimore<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/trump-suggests-send-troops-new-orleans-another-crime-crackdown-rcna228841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New Orleans<\/a>. The threats have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/video\/gov-wes-moore-welcomes-federal-support-but-not-national-guard-to-baltimore-full-interview-246995013705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drawn blowback<\/a> from Democratic mayors and governors in Illinois, Maryland and other states.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fc98c4\" class=\"body-graf\">Earlier this month, the president also signed a memo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/trump-signs-order-send-national-guard-memphis-crime-crackdown-rcna231517\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">establishing a task force<\/a> to mobilize National Guard troops and federal law enforcement to Memphis, Tennessee. That move was supported by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1043d5\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump also authorized the deployment of National Guard troops and a surge of federal law enforcement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/trump-visit-local-law-enforcement-national-guard-troops-dc-thursday-rcna226367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to the nation\u2019s capital in August<\/a>. While Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser credited the surge with lowering crime in the city, she also said near the end of August that the continued presence of immigration agents and troops was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/bowser-trump-police-takeover-lower-dc-crime-national-guard-ice-rcna227582\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not working<\/a>\u201d in Washington.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3de93c\" class=\"body-graf\">Earlier this month, Washington sued the Trump administration, alleging an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/dc-sues-trump-administration-illegal-deployment-national-guard-rcna228913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">illegal deployment\u201d<\/a> of National Guard troops to the city.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-21a806\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">That lawsuit came just days after a federal judge in California ruled that the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/judge-rules-trump-illegally-deployed-national-guard-l-rcna224779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">violated a law <\/a>that bars the use of soldiers for civilian law enforcement activities.
