JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office said a 38-year-old man died in the hospital Sunday afternoon after becoming unresponsive in a police car following his arrest. <\/p>\n

JSO said its officers were called to the Southside Estates neighborhood on Cortez Road after receiving reports of a \u201csuspicious person\u201d attempting to break into homes, who was later identified as Charles Samuel Urbach.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon arrival, officers determined that an individual was observed prowling through the backyards of multiple residences,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n

After a brief search, police said Urbach was found around 1:20 p.m. hiding in a pond behind homes and was taken into custody.<\/p>\n

While being escorted from the rear of the property to a patrol vehicle, JSO said Urbach became \u201ccombative\u201d and struck a K-9 officer in the chest with his elbow while being searched. <\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers quickly gained control using minimal force, and the suspect was secured in the rear of a patrol vehicle without further incident,\u201d JSO said. <\/p>\n

The agency said its officers began identifying Urbach when he became unresponsive in the police vehicle. <\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers immediately requested medical assistance from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department after the suspect failed to respond to multiple sternum rubs,\u201d JSO said. \u201cAs officers awaited JFRD\u2019s arrival, two doses of NARCAN were administered by officers trained in its use.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon arrival, JFRD declared Urbach dead at 2:42 p.m.<\/p>\n

Urbach\u2019s death is currently listed as undetermined; however, JSO said the investigation remains active and will await the medical examiner\u2019s review to determine the manner of death.<\/p>\n
