Paul \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, better known as EHD,  is common throughout Eastern US states in late summer and fall. <\/p>\n<p>It is caused by a virus transmitted to deer through the bite of tiny flying midges  \u2014 biting flies often called \u201cno-see-ums\u201d due to their minuscule nature.\u00a0It causes internal bleeding, breathing problems, swelling around the eyes, and extreme fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>EHD is not transmitted by direct contact between deer and cannot be spread to humans.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37231810\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/biting-midge-genus-stenoxenus-112268426.jpg\" alt=\"Adult biting midge of the genus Stenoxenus.\" class=\"wp-image-37231810\"  \/>The virus transmitted to deer through the bite of tiny flying midges  \u2014 biting flies often called \u201cno-see-ums\u201d due to their minuscule nature.\u00a0 ViniSouza128 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Still, this year\u2019s outbreak has caused alarm, with cases also reported in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. <\/p>\n<p>No cases of EHD have officially been reported in New York this year. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cwhl.vet.cornell.edu\/project\/epizootic-hemorrhagic-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornell Wildlife Health Lab <\/a>reports that \u201cin New York State, outbreaks of EHD have occurred each year since 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the early fall of 2020, a large outbreak occurred in the lower Hudson Valley, killing around 1,500 deer, per the organization. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Oh, deer.
