{"id":260419,"date":"2025-09-28T04:24:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T04:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/260419\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T04:24:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T04:24:12","slug":"starbucks-closes-san-antonio-stores-as-part-of-turnaround-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/260419\/","title":{"rendered":"Starbucks closes San Antonio stores as part of turnaround plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 At least two San Antonio Starbucks locations are among the hundreds closing across the U.S., Canada and Europe as it focuses resources on a turnaround.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks did not confirm how many stores are closing to KSAT; however, it said it would update its store locator by Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Below is a list of the locations permanently closed, according to the Starbucks app:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>1604 &amp; Blanco Road location: 18154 Blanco Road<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Bandera &amp; Guilbeau location: 8407 Bandera Road<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>KSAT will update this list as it becomes aware of other locations closing.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks said affected baristas will be offered severance packages and transfers to other locations where possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks said it expects to have 18,300 North American locations when its fiscal year ends on Sunday. As of June 29, the company had 18,734 locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a research note Thursday, TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles estimated Starbucks will close around 500 North American stores in its fiscal fourth quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a letter sent to employees Thursday, Niccol said a review of the company\u2019s stores identified locations where the company doesn\u2019t see a path to financial stability or isn\u2019t able to create the physical environment customers expect. Those stores are being closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cEach year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations,\u201d Niccol wrote. \u201cThis is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks said it expects to spend $1 billion on the restructuring, including $150 million on employee separation benefits and $850 million related to the physical store closing and the cost of exiting leases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks shares fell 1.38% since Thursday, as of Friday\u2019s market close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It was not immediately clear how many of the stores that are closing are unionized. Workers at 650 company-owned U.S. Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since 2021, but they have yet to reach a contract agreement with the company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks Workers United, the labor group organizing workers, said Thursday that the closures were made without input from Starbucks\u2019 baristas. The union said it intends to engage in bargaining at every union-represented store that is closing to ensure workers can be placed at another store they prefer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFixing what\u2019s broken at Starbucks isn\u2019t possible without centering the people who engage with the company\u2019s customers day in and day out,\u201d the union said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">News of the store closures arrived just over a week after unionized employees in three states <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/starbucks-dress-code-lawsuits-union-9d1eff89242d00f65d459d8a393f409a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued Starbucks<\/a> over its new dress code, saying the company refused to reimburse workers who had to buy new clothes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks said it used a consistent set of criteria to determine the stores that are closing and union representation wasn\u2019t a factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks will end its 2025 fiscal year with 124 fewer North American stores than its previous fiscal year. It\u2019s rare for Starbucks to shrink its store count during a fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Starbucks plans to increase its North American store count in its next fiscal year, Niccol said. The company said it also plans to redesign more than 1,000 locations in the next 12 months to give them a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/starbucks-ceo-niccol-coffee-b547ab2141e194b30675ad8d1caff90d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warmer, more welcoming feel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">This is the second round of layoffs at Starbucks this year. In February, Niccol <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/starbucks-layoffs-corporate-ac4110200335139836c6b370d864313c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced the layoffs<\/a> of 1,100 corporate employees globally and eliminated several hundred open positions. At the time, Niccol said Starbucks needed to operate more efficiently and increase accountability for decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Niccol is a turnaround specialist who was <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/starbucks-ceo-brian-niccol-f2b918d9862a329d7f0ba3373ebbc444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brought into Starbucks<\/a> a year ago this month to give the brand a jolt. Under Niccol\u2019s leadership, the struggling Chipotle chain, where Niccol was CEO for about 6 years, essentially doubled its revenue and its profit, and its stock price, soared. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In July, Starbucks reported its sixth straight quarter of lower same-store sales, as weak U.S. traffic continued to be a drain on the company.
