{"id":260950,"date":"2025-09-28T09:33:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T09:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/260950\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T09:33:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T09:33:16","slug":"health-alert-issued-in-duval-county-after-blue-green-algae-toxins-detected-in-st-johns-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/260950\/","title":{"rendered":"Health alert issued in Duval County after blue-green algae toxins detected in St. Johns River"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. <\/strong> \u2013 A health alert has been issued in Duval County by the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) after blue-green algae toxins were detected in the St. Johns River. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The agency recommended people take caution in and around the St. Johns River, particularly near Mandarin Point. <\/p>\n<p>Blue green algae was detected in the St. Johns River by the Florida Department of Health (Copyright 2025 by WJXT News4JAX &#8211; All rights reserved.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">FDOH is asking residents and visitors to take the following precautions: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Do not drink, swim, wade, use personal watercraft, or come into contact with waters where there is a visible bloom. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Wash your skin and clothing with soap and water if you have any contact with algae, or discolored or water that smells unpleasant.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Keep pets and livestock away from the area to avoid any contact with water. Waters where algae blooms are present are not safe for animals. Pets and livestock should use an alternative source of water when algae blooms are present. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Do not cook or clean dishes with water contaminated by algae blooms. Boiling the water will not eliminate toxins.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Eating fillets from healthy fish caught in freshwater lakes experiencing blooms is safe. Rinse fish fillets with tap or bottled water, throw out the guts, and cook fish thoroughly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Do not eat shellfish in waters with algae blooms.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">According to FDOH, blue-green algae are a type of bacteria commonly found in Florida\u2019s freshwater environments.
