{"id":261695,"date":"2025-09-28T16:30:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T16:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/261695\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T16:30:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T16:30:13","slug":"ryder-cup-keeping-extra-security-for-final-day-after-fan-chaos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/261695\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryder Cup keeping extra security for final day after fan chaos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The extra security added for Rory McIlroy\u2019s four-ball match \u2014 as well as for the three other ones, too \u2014 Saturday will remain in place for the final day of the Ryder Cup during singles matches, PGA of America confirmed to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/27\/sports\/rory-mcilroy-flips-out-at-ryder-cup-fans-in-angry-day-2-scene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fan conduct spiraled<\/a> and led to heckles, slurs and boos being hurled toward the polarizing McIlroy during an ugly day at Bethpage Black, the organization in charge of the Ryder Cup placed added security and New York State police at the matches, while also adding additional messages on video boards scattered throughout the course about fan behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to closely monitor fan behavior and take appropriate action,\u201d the PGA of America said in a statement Saturday night, hours after the passionate fandom that defines the Ryder Cup took an embarrassing turn.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37236455\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/matt-fitzpatrick-team-europe-celebrates-112293310.jpg\" alt=\"Europe's Matt Fitzpatrick celebrates surrounded by New York State Troopers at the Ryder Cup on Sept. 27, 2025.\" class=\"wp-image-37236455\"  \/>Europe\u2019s Matt Fitzpatrick celebrates surrounded by New York State Troopers at the Ryder Cup on Sept. 27, 2025. James Marsh\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/27\/sports\/rory-mcilroy-refuses-to-putt-until-rowdy-ryder-cup-fans-shut-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tension between McIlroy and the American fans<\/a> \u2014 a contentious relationship that dates back to his last two Ryder Cups in the country, too \u2014 started to bubble Friday, when <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/26\/sports\/rory-mcilory-lets-out-guttural-yell-after-massive-ryder-cup-putt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he flipped off a group of fans<\/a> walking off the 11th hole. <\/p>\n<p>He spread his arms out and blew a kiss to the crowd Saturday morning at the first tee. Then, on the 16th during foursomes, he stepped back from his shot and told fans to \u201cshut the f\u2013k up.\u201d In the afternoon, on the sixth hole, McIlroy kept squatting as fans heckled him and said he wouldn\u2019t putt \u201cuntil they shut up,\u201d too.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>But by the time he neared the turn during four-ball, everything had worsened. Shane Lowry, his afternoon partner, reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/27\/sports\/shane-lowry-gets-ryder-cup-fan-kicked-out-as-state-police-beefs-up-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had a spectator kicked out<\/a> and faced taunts about his weight.\u00a0McIlroy faced comments containing homophobic slurs, reminders of his collapse at the 2024 U.S. Open, taunts about his marriage with Erica Stoll and more, according to Golf Digest. \u201cF\u2013k you, Rory,\u201d chants echoed throughout his rounds at Bethpage, and Heather McMahan, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/28\/sports\/ryder-cup-emcee-heather-mcmahan-steps-down-after-leading-f-k-you-rory-chants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an emcee who initiated one herself at the first tee in the morning, stepped down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>At least a dozen state police were following McIlroy\u2019s match by the time it reached the 16th green. Justin Thomas, who was one of the American golfers in McIlroy\u2019s group, placed both hands in the air before shots to try and silence fans at times, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you play an away Ryder Cup, it\u2019s really, really challenging,\u201d McIlroy said following his match Saturday afternoon. \u201cIt\u2019s not for me to say. People can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not.
