It\u2019s the latest city bridge to be shut down for major construction work.<\/p>\n<p>The 109-year-old bridge will be under construction until January 2028, according to the the Chicago Department of Transportation. The bridge, which stretches over the south branch of the Chicago River, will fully close for cars and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>CTA service on the Green and Pink lines will continue while the bridge is closed except for two shutdowns planned for fall 2026 and spring 2027, according to the transportation department.<\/p>\n<p>Cars traveling east on Lake Street will be detoured to Desplaines Street to Washington Street to Franklin Street and back to Lake Street. Pedestrians will be detoured via Canal Street to Wacker Drive on Randolph Street.<\/p>\n<p>The renovations were <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2023\/8\/14\/23831795\/lake-street-bridge-renovation\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">originally planned for 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>                            <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-5d0000\" name=\"image-5d0000\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Lake Street Bridge Closure Detour Routes.png\"  width=\"840\" height=\"689\" src=\"https:\/\/cst.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/5f0bcfd\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1528x1254+0+0\/resize\/840x689!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fac%2F48%2F4a83d99444c2a840b969f1f505f7%2Flake-street-bridge-closure-detour-routes.png\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" bad-src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSI2ODlweCIgd2lkdGg9Ijg0MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Lake Street bridge will close down for repairs until January 2028. <\/p>\n<p>Chicago Department of Transportation<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/content\/dam\/city\/depts\/cdot\/bridge\/LakeStreetBridge_VirtualPublicMeeting_Slides%20(09.24.25).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">improvements for the bridge<\/a> include replacing the bridge\u2019s deck, substructures and CTA tracks, and rehabilitating the bridge\u2019s houses and mechanical and electrical systems.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/transportation\/2025\/04\/11\/state-street-bridge-repair\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">State Street Bridge closed for emergency repairs<\/a> in April and is expected to reopen in November.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Avenue Bridge is also undergoing repairs. The 17-month long <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/transportation\/2025\/08\/04\/chicago-traffic-construction-halsted-street-avenue-department-transportation-cdot-craig-turner\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">construction project shut down<\/a> Halsted Street at Chicago Avenue.
