When you can save other kids, but you can\u2019t save your own child,\u201d Eric Manson, the father of Ramel Ingram, told the Daily News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow about that? (Theodore Parisienne \/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Manson said Ramel had recently begun a training program at the Taj Gibson Foundation\u2019s Fort Greene community center to become a youth mentor himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about mentoring and keeping the kids off the street, inspiring them to get into graphics, or music, or arts,\u201d Manson said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to create a safe place to keep the older kids off the street so we don\u2019t have the situation we have right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 21-year-old gunman, Kindle Akinola, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/09\/02\/nyc-shootings-victims-record-lows-shoplifting-down-crime-takes-hit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot Ingram multiple times<\/a> in the chest at about 8:45 p.m. Sept. 17 in front of his grandmother\u2019s apartment where he had been living, two blocks from the southeastern edge of Prospect Park in Flatbush, cops said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Ramel Ingram, 24, was running away from an attacker when he was fatally shot in front of his apartment building on Crooke Ave. near Ocean Ave. in Flatbush, Brooklyn on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025. (Theodore Parisienne \/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Ingram\u2019s grandmother, Cynthia Ingram said he had just finished helping her clean up the apartment on Crooke Ave. apartment near Ocean Ave. and showered before telling her he was stepping outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[He] said \u2018Grandma I\u2019m going downstairs.\u2019 He wasn\u2019t outside that long and I heard shots,\u201d the grandmother recalled. \u201cI asked my daughter, \u2018Is he in his room?\u2019 I called his phone and didn\u2019t get no answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After hearing someone call her name from outside she rushed downstairs to find Ingram bleeding on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t talking. I know that he was conscious. (Theodore Parisienne \/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Medics rushed Ingram to Kings County Hospital but he could not be saved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy reaction to what happened is numbness. He was killed on my doorstep,\u201d Cynthia Ingram said. \u201cWhat type of reaction am I supposed to have? His blood is on my doorstep. I\u2019m numb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Akinola was arrested and charged the next day with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. His mother died of sickle cell anemia crisis when he was only 15 months old and Manson raised him as a single father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke to my son every day, three or four times a day. I\u2019m one of those dads. I was on my job. I\u2019ve been there all his life,\u201d Manson said. \u201cI\u2019m a full-time dad, not part-time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manson said Ramel excelled at football and basketball growing up, and had recently spent his summer volunteering his time coaching his younger brother\u2019s basketball team during their off-season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s known all up and down I-95. He played high-level AAU basketball, which was a traveling program. He\u2019s very well known in the state and city of New York,\u201d Manson said.<\/p>\n<p>In adulthood Ingram found his calling managing several of his aspiring rapper friends, and hoped to one day make a career managing artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had some skills. That was his passion. I really instilled both of my boys with entrepreneurship,\u201d Manson said. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t into working for nobody. (Metro-BDA Wolves)<\/p>\n<p>Ingram\u2019s grandmother, who called the victim her \u201cpride and joy\u201d described him as well-mannered and respectful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a lot of structure and well-manneredness with him. Ramel was very respectable. \u2018Yes ma\u2019am,\u2019 \u2018Yes sir.\u2019 If you asked him to do something, he didn\u2019t argue with you. He did what you asked him to do, didn\u2019t give you any back talk, anything like that,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was a clown, and he was very funny.
