Heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne<\/a> was in a rough place at the start of the 1990s for multiple reasons<\/a>, which is why he was primed to receive positivity from anyone who\u2019d share it. In a new interview Metal Hammer, Faith No More<\/a> drummer Mike Bordin<\/a> recalls doing precisely that during his encouraging and \u201cincredible\u201d first meeting with the genre\u2019s one and only Prince of Darkness.<\/p>\n

What Bordin Said to Ozzy<\/p>\n

In the latest issue of Metal Hammer<\/a>, Bordin reflects on meeting Osbourne for the first time in 1990.<\/p>\n

You see, Faith No More had just released their breakthrough LP \u2013 1989\u2019s The Real Thing<\/a>, which featured second single \u201cEpic<\/a>\u201d \u2013 and as Metal Hammer writes, the band \u201cwere named by RIP Magazine<\/a> as \u2018Band Of The Year<\/a>\u2019 and invited to a star-studded awards ceremony in Los Angeles where they\u2019d perform a short set.\u201d According to Revolver<\/a>, the event was held at the Hollywood Palladium on November 9, 1990 (in celebration of the magazine\u2019s fourth anniversary).<\/p>\n

Per setlist.fm<\/a>, their performance actually consisted of 16 songs (including \u201cEpic\u201d with Young MC<\/a>). They undoubtedly saved the best for last, however, when they got to perform Black Sabbath<\/a>\u2019s \u201cWar Pigs<\/a>\u201d (from 1970\u2019s Paranoid<\/a>) with two awesome guests.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe couldn\u2019t believe it!\u201d Bordin told Metal Hammer. \u201cWe got up and played with [James] Hetfield<\/a> and Ozzy and it was incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although playing with the Metallica<\/a> frontman was surely amazing, it was the opportunity to meet and jam with Ozzy that truly took Bordin\u2019s breath away.<\/p>\n

Metal Hammer notes that after their show, Faith No More \u201cwent . . . to a Hollywood party filled with rock and metal icons.” Bordin was \u201csitting back in a corner to relax\u201d when Ozzy came up to him and asked: \u201cWhy did you guys do \u2018War Pigs\u2019 on the album? Are you taking the piss?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, he\u2019s referring to Faith No More\u2019s cover of the song<\/a> on The Real Thing, and in that moment, Bordin was taken aback. \u201cIt caught me off guard,\u201d he revealed to Metal Hammer. \u201cIt was the last thing I\u2019d ever think for someone who\u2019s responsible for such iconic music might say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bordin added:<\/p>\n

He’d been through some rough times and looked so sad, man. I launched into this long story about how when I was young my mom killed herself, I didn\u2019t have much of a family\u2026 Things changed for me when I heard Sabbath. I found this music that wasn\u2019t singing about stuff that was pleasant \u2013 it\u2019s powerful, dark and the message is you\u2019re not alone. So I told him, \u201cYou saved my life.\u201d It really fucking hit him. I had to tell him what he meant though.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As Metal Hammer mentions, Ozzy and Bordin eventually \u201cshared a bill in South America\u201d several years later, and in 1996, Bordin \u201cwas recruited as the new drummer in Ozzy\u2019s band . . . and toured with him frequently over the next decade, drumming on 2001\u2019s Down To Earth<\/a> and 2007\u2019s Black Rain<\/a>.\u201d Bordin also played on 2002\u2019s Live at Budokan<\/a> and re-recordings of Blizzard of Ozz<\/a> and Diary of a Madman<\/a>, as well as 2005\u2019s Under Cover<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More Ozzy + Black Sabbath News<\/strong><\/p>\n

As most metal fans already know, the original Black Sabbath lineup \u2013 Ozzy,\u00a0Tony Iommi<\/a>,\u00a0Geezer Butler<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bill Ward<\/a> \u2013 will be reuniting for the Back to the Beginning<\/a> concert next Saturday, July 5, at the Villa Park in their hometown of Birmingham, England.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, it\u2019ll feature supporting performances from many standout artists, including Metallica, Pantera<\/a>, Tool<\/a>, Mastodon<\/a>, Alice in Chains<\/a>, Gojira<\/a>, Halestorm<\/a> and Slayer<\/a>! (Sadly, Wolfgang Van Halen<\/a> had to back out of the show<\/a> due to his prior commitment to support\u00a0Creed<\/a>\u2019s upcoming tour.)<\/p>\n

As for Ozzy himself, he recently revealed that although he\u2019s not a fan of doing duets, he\u2019d love the chance to do one with one of his biggest idols<\/a>: Beatles legend\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/a>.<\/p>\n
