Death Stranding 2: On the Beach<\/a> sold 66% fewer physical copies than its predecessor in the UK at launch, but the market has dramatically changed over the past five years or so.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year<\/a>, we reported that in 2024 boxed games sales accounted for just 4% of all video game spending in the UK. It\u2019s actually difficult to find new physical games at retail unless you shop online these days.<\/p>\n

One interesting tidbit is that Death Stranding 2\u2019s physical sales were also 33% lower than last year\u2019s Astro Bot<\/a>, although journalist Chris Dring reports that game was an abnormally \u201cphysical heavy\u201d release.<\/p>\n

Death Stranding 2 was No.1 in the UK physical charts last week. Its launch sales were -66% lower than Death Stranding 1… but different eras. It’s a far more digital market today. It’s 33% lower than Astro Bot’s launch, but that was also a physical heavy release, too.\u2014 Christopher Dring (@Chris_Dring) June 29, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We\u2019ll need to wait for more data with digital numbers included before we can conclude much from this, then.<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s important to add that the title\u2019s Deluxe Edition, which included early access, was only available digitally as well.<\/p>\n

A quick look at the PS Store<\/strong><\/a> in the UK shows Kojima Productions\u2019 latest behind only EA Sports FC 25<\/a> in the best-sellers list. Unfortunately, that\u2019s really the only other reference point we have right now, as Sony doesn\u2019t publicly surface concurrent player lists and other interesting data like that.<\/p>\n
