New video footage from Spanish broadcaster Movistar showed a beer can flying toward McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, while they were near the crowd. Team USA had already struggled badly, losing six of eight matches that day at Bethpage Black. But the chaos in the stands stole the spotlight, leaving McIlroy, Stoll, and teammate Shane Lowry facing both insults and objects from angry fans.<\/p>\n

The incident happened during the evening four-ball matches. McIlroy, who had earlier won his morning foursome with Tommy Fleetwood, was walking near fans when a beer can was thrown in his direction. His wife, Erica Stoll, turned in shock as the object flew past. A staff member stepped in to hold McIlroy back as he moved toward the group of rowdy supporters.It was not the only heated scene. Shane Lowry, McIlroy\u2019s playing partner, was also targeted with chants and body-shaming remarks. At one point, Lowry tried to walk toward an abusive fan but was stopped by officials.Erica Stoll, who is American, had followed her husband\u2019s round at Bethpage. But the constant insults grew worse, with some fans even singing about her. According to Talksport, Stoll left the course in tears before later rejoining at the 18th hole, where she celebrated McIlroy and Lowry\u2019s win over Justin Thomas and Cameron Young. That victory gave Team Europe a huge 12\u20135 lead.<\/p>\n

Both players made their feelings clear. Lowry admitted the constant jeers about his weight went too far. McIlroy, meanwhile, snapped back at hecklers during his shots, shouting at fans to \u201cshut up\u201d and even screaming profanity after making a putt.
