There’s a new burger joint in Bedford earning praise from its great burgers at a fair price: Called Taco Burger<\/a>, it’s a mom-and-pop located at 607 Harwood Rd. in a space that used to be Uzy’s Pizza & Gyros.<\/p>\n

The mom and pop are husband-and-wife Carlos and Sherry Gonzalez, Bedford locals and a lovely hospitable couple who have some history with the location, which was once a Subway.<\/p>\n

In 2022, it became home to Uzy’s Pizza & Gyro, which was open afternoons and evenings. Carlos and Sherry forged a mutually beneficial arrangement with Uzy’s owner where they would operate a taco stand out of the restaurant, serving breakfast tacos during hours when Uzy’s was not open.<\/p>\n

“We worked in same kitchen but we had our own menu and were open different hours,” Sherry says. “We were open in morning, selling breakfast tacos and burgers.”<\/p>\n

And then the burgers took off. People came in for the burgers, and they found themselves making far more burgers than tacos.<\/p>\n

“I think part of the reason people love our burgers is that everything is made in-house \u2014 we do all our own sauces, everything is made fresh,” she says. “And then we love what we do and it shows in our food.”<\/p>\n

“We also pride ourselves on our customer-friendly prices,” she says. “Our burger patties are 1\/3 pound. We want to provide a place where poeple can go and leave full and not break the bank.”<\/p>\n

It was around this time that Uzy’s owner decided it was time to go. “Uzy’s wasn’t making enough money, and so it was good for both of us that we were able to take over,” Sherry says. “It was always a dream \u2014 Carlos wanted his own restaurant, and I love the people side.”<\/p>\n

Their menu<\/a> offers nine varieties of burgers including a mushoom burger, bacon cheeseburger, barbecue cheddar, pepperjack jalapeno, and a patty melt on Texas toast.<\/p>\n

They also have a BLT, Texas cheesesteak, chicken parm on pita bread, and a spicy taco burrito \u2014 “for those who love tacos but want a burrito” \u2014 featuring a crumbled burger patty with sauteed onions, mushrooms, peppers, corn, tomatoes, olives, cheddar, and chipotle sauce rolled in a flour tortilla.<\/p>\n

Burger prices range from $6 to $8.<\/p>\n

They’re still doing pizza but they’ve changed the recipe from the Greek\/tavern style that Uzy’s favored to a more standardized approach that Carlos learned from his prior restaurant experience. Varieties range from a basic cheese pizza to a veggie to a meat lovers, priced from $10 to $16. They also do wings.<\/p>\n

“We’ve been transitioning away from Uzy’s, but we still want to be there for those customers who go back to the Uzy’s days,” Sherry says.<\/p>\n

In summary: What started out as a part-time taco enterprise has evolved into Taco Burger, a restaurant with “taco” in the name, but is not serving tacos at all. Burgers are what the people want.<\/p>\n
