The NFL announced the same day that Benito will headline<\/a> the 2026 Super Bowl<\/a> halftime show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s going to be loud, it\u2019s going to be Latin, it\u2019s going to be (mostly) in Spanish, and it\u2019s already driving right-wingers insane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tProminent Republicans are already fuming at the possibility that Bad Bunny\u2019s halftime performance in February will feature critiques of President Donald Trump and his targeting of immigrant communities, and that it may require them to turn on English subtitles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this month, Bad Bunny canceled the U.S. dates<\/a> of the DeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS tour over concerns that large gatherings of Latinos in the U.S. could be magnets for the Trump administration\u2019s anti-immigration efforts. \u201cThere was the issue of \u2014 like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it\u2019s something that we were talking about and very concerned about,\u201d he said of the decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe announcement that a vocal critic of President Donald Trump\u2019s agenda will play the Super Bowl sparked immediate outrage from the MAGA base.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe NFL is self-destructing year after year,\u201d MAGA slop YouTuber Benny Johnson wrote on X<\/a>. \u201cMassive Trump hater. Anti-ICE activist. No songs in English,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n\tConspiracy theorist and right-wing commentator Jack Posobiec suggested that the selection was a conspiracy<\/a> orchestrated by former President Barack Obama.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBarack Obama\u2019s best friend Jay-Z runs the Super Bowl selection process through his company Roc Nation which has an exclusive contract with the NFL. This is who chooses the halftime show, the most-watched musical performance in America,\u201d he wrote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tConservative commentator Greg Price noted<\/a> that \u201cthe NFL chose Bad Bunny to perform the Super Bowl halftime show<\/a> despite the fact that he recently said he wouldn\u2019t perform in the continental United States again because ICE is deporting illegal aliens.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSome of the criticism was a little more stylistic. The right wing account \u201cRedheaded Libertarian\u201d described<\/a> Bad Bunny as \u201cdemonic Marxist who has been granted the largest stage with the greatest audience in the middle of a Christian revival.\u201d Podcaster Trish Regan complained<\/a> that Bad Bunny\u2019s music contained Spanish-language slang and explicit language, even halftime show performers typically edit out any explicit content. \u201cThis is a rapper with a catalog of vulgar lyrics in Spanish and English \u2014 including calling a president a \u201cmamabicho\u201d (translation: vile insult),\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe account \u201cEnd Wokeness,\u201d which boasts almost 4 million followers on X, suggested<\/a> that a Harper\u2019s Bazaar photoshoot in which Bad Bunny wore a skirt should have weighed against his selection for the performance. Commentator Mario Nawfal wrote<\/a> that \u201cmaybe someone should let the NFL know that the average halftime viewer in Des Moines doesn\u2019t speak fluent reggaeton [\u2026]\u00a0 Enjoy the show, America. Just don\u2019t ask for subtitles.\u201d Right wing filmmaker Robby Starbuck complained<\/a> that \u201cthe guy literally says he isn\u2019t touring the US because of Trump\u2019s ICE raids and just released a video mocking President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a pick designed to divide fans and no doubt Bad Bunny will find some way to push a woke message.\u201d Starbuck also suggested that team owners were either \u201cin on this idiocy\u201d or \u201cjust culturally that disconnected from reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reality is that public approval of the Trump administration\u2019s handling of immigration enforcement continues to slip<\/a> as the Department of Homeland Security and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement continue to use authoritarian tactics. The reality is that Latin and South America are two of the largest and fastest-growing<\/a> viewership markets for the NFL.
