The Phoenix Suns guaranteed the final year of Nick Richards\u2019 contract on Sunday, according to The Athletic\u2019s Fred Katz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Phoenix had to fully guarantee the $5 million owed to Richards in 2025-26 by Sunday or cut him, per a deadline in his contract. Fully guaranteeing it made him eligible to be traded this offseason.<\/p>\n

Phoenix acquired Richards<\/a> from the Charlotte Hornets in January, sending out Josh Okogie and three second-round picks in the trade.<\/p>\n

He was brought in to replace Jusuf Nurkic, who dealt with injuries, a suspension, illness and a benching to end his Suns tenure. Nurkic was later dealt to the Hornets, who on Sunday traded the center to the Utah Jazz for Collin Sexton.<\/p>\n

Richards was the Suns\u2019 starting center in 34 of the 36 games he played, averaging 9.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He had 10 double-doubles.<\/p>\n

The Suns have spent the beginning of the offseason remaking their center room, adding Mark Williams<\/a> from Charlotte and No. 10 overall pick Khaman Maluach<\/a> on Wednesday. Both former Duke centers would likely be ahead of Richards in the rotation.<\/p>\n

Former second-round draft pick Oso Ighodaro is also under contract at nearly $2 million, but he could slide down to power forward at times with the positional logjam at center.<\/p>\n

NBA free agency officially begins on Monday at 3 p.m. MST.<\/p>\n
