{"id":264651,"date":"2025-09-29T20:03:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T20:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/264651\/"},"modified":"2025-09-29T20:03:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T20:03:14","slug":"big-completes-first-built-project-in-los-angeles-at-claremont-mckenna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/264651\/","title":{"rendered":"BIG completes first built project in Los Angeles at Claremont McKenna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/big\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BIG<\/a> has completed a building at Claremont McKenna College in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/los-angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a> made of &#8220;a series of parallel building volumes side by side&#8221; that surrounds a central atrium.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioned in 2020, the Robert Day Sciences Center is located on the eastern side of the Claremont McKenna College Roberts campus and contains spaces, labs and classrooms dedicated to science education.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252611 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/robert-day-sciences-center-claremont-mckenna-college-california-big_dezeen_2364_col_28-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Project on college campus\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>BIG has completed its first built project in Los Angeles at Claremont McKenna College<\/p>\n<p>Although it is located just outside of the city of Los Angeles in Claremont, it is within Los Angeles County. The studio has dubbed it &#8220;BIG&#8217;s first built project in Los Angeles&#8221; and is the first building completed as part of an overall BIG-designed master plan for the campus.<\/p>\n<p>The five-storey building is made up of three pairs of stacked rectangular volumes wrapped in steel trusses and a reinforced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/concrete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concrete<\/a> exterior cladding.<\/p>\n<p>Each pair of volumes is rotated 45 degrees from the level below, while the interstitial space between them creates a multi-storey, glass-enclosed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/atriums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atrium<\/a> at the centre, which serves as a social space according to BIG founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bjarke-ingels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bjarke Ingels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252600 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/robert-day-sciences-center-claremont-mckenna-college-california-big_dezeen_2364_col_38-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Building made of two volumes by BIG\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The building is made of six stacked rectangular volumes<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We imagined the Sciences Center as a series of parallel building volumes side by side \u2013 with a public space in between \u2013 that are rotated in all the same directions as the [campus] mall,&#8221; said Ingels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though each of the individual building volumes are rational, flexible, and capable of being computer labs or wet labs, the open atrium in between becomes a Piranesian social space where you can see fellow students, faculty, colleagues, and professors from every level.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/07\/17\/pacific-palisades-rebuilding-iwan-baan-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/iwan-baan-pacific-palisades-destruction-_dezeen_2364_sq3-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Iwan Baan LA fires images\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Iwan Baan photos reveal &#8220;unevenness in the rate of recovery&#8221; following LA fires\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Visitors can enter the building underneath the volumes&#8217; significant overhangs at three main points \u2013 in a subterranean, southwest corner, which leads to the building&#8217;s ground level, or two opposing entrances on level one.<\/p>\n<p>A grand &#8220;social&#8221; staircase sits on the ground floor and leads up through the center of the building. Educational spaces, such as seminar rooms, classrooms, offices and labs line each rectangular volume.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252603 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/robert-day-sciences-center-claremont-mckenna-college-california-big_dezeen_2364_col_35-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Building made of two volumes by BIG\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>It is clad in concrete<\/p>\n<p>Additional staircases and elevators are located on either end of the volumes and in wedge-shaped terraces that stretch between them, which overlook the atrium.<\/p>\n<p>On the interior, the building is clad in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/douglas-fir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Douglas fir<\/a> panels and a red and gold palette \u2013 the school colours \u2013 was integrated into flooring, upholstery and furniture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252625 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/robert-day-sciences-center-claremont-mckenna-college-california-big_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"BIG Robert Day Sciences Center in Los Angeles\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>An atrium leads up through the building&#8217;s five stories<\/p>\n<p>The building also contains eight outdoor terraces planted with native spaces that are intended to be additional social spaces or &#8220;outdoor classrooms&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Claremont McKenna College president Hiram E Chodosh said the building was designed to encourage work and socialising across disciplines.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252616 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/robert-day-sciences-center-claremont-mckenna-college-california-big_dezeen_2364_col_23-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"BIG building on Claremont McKenna college\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The school colours of red and gold were used as interior highlights<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bjarke&#8217;s rotating stacks create opportunities to learn at the intersections,&#8221; said Chodosh. &#8220;The wood fuels our social warmth. The glass cuts through the barriers. This is a carved jewel for Claremont McKenna College. A gem for the ages.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>BIG also recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/06\/14\/big-los-angeles-office-renovated-paul-r-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened an office in a renovated 1920s building in Los Angeles in 2024<\/a>.
